I send my B&W work to Ken Lieberman in NYC and I am very very pleased with results. I use Ilford 400.

Thank you all for your answers, I have a lot to learn about the "computer" side of the M8....
What I can say about my experience so far is that the resulting pictures are very clean on my computer (my wife and father noted that the pictures look very good)....
I also enjoy the aperture priority mode and the possibility to lock the exposure...to me it is much faster than my M6...
The auto white balance is very poor, I have to select my setting myself (mainly daylight and tungsten).
I also put the auto review option Off, so that I am not chimping all the time, it is a useful option to feel like I am using a leica.
In conclusion, I am satisfied with my experience so far with this camera.
Is there any thing to look for that could be an issue?

Good evening,
I am testing my new m8 and lenses....I have noticed that even at short
distances, the framelines of my 35 mm and 50 mm summicron lenses are showing
less than what appears on teh actual picture.
Have you noticed this, and if yes, how do you compensate for this? I am asking
because I like to include parts of my subjects at the limit of the frame and it
is kind of difficult if the framelines are very imprecise.
Thank you for your answers,
Arie

On the leica M8, when I set DNG format, it is automatically 10 MP format. Then I plug the camera on my computer and use the wizard to export the pictures. the pictures taken with DNG have a very small dimension as I mentioned above but their size is 10MP. The funny thing is that when I copy them on the capture one program, they become dimension 3936 X 2624 . I am not sure why...
actually how do I export my pictures directly to the capture one program? Second question: when I am in capture one program, how do I change a DNG formated picture to JPEG picture?
Thank you very much for your help,
Arie

Hi,
I received my M8 few days ago and have a question on the DNG format: when I
transfer the pictures taken in DNG format to my computer, the size of the
pictures is very small (320 by 240). But when I use JPEG format, i get the
large size on my computer.
I would appreciate your help on this.
Thanks

Douglas, very interesting answer. I will travel to Paris next
August, and I will take the time to visit photo exhibitions to see
the difference.

When I write that they lack detail, I really mean that they look
somber (If I can say that),dark is a better word. I could see how it
can be used to communiquate a feeling, but when I see
systematic "darkness", I wonder...- Thanks

Good afternoon to all,

Something bothers me a little bit about a lot of pictures that I see on this site, with the last exemple coming from Salgado'spictures (before him, I can think about David Allan Harley(?) ): it seems that there is a tendancy to underexpose. I am expecting pictures with a lot of details (look at HCB and many many others).
So my questions are: what do you think? why do we get such results?...I do not critize the work presented on this site, it is just something that I would like to discuss with you.

Many Thanks - Arie

Good afternoon, everyone,

I been shooting a lot of B&W lately. I am not very satisfied with the results (I send the to a 1 hour lab in the US, I am located in Bermuda). My slides are coming very good, so maybe iot is time for me to consider other option than a one hour lab. I don;t want to get into developing myu picures, because it is very very warm here and humid too, and I am not sure that my wife will accept the chemicals in the house. Where could I send (in the US) my negatives to get good results (I suppose of course that my abilities are not too bad :) )? I have heard that ST Miguel is very good, any other idea?

On another note, I have seen a lot people "disapearing" from this site. it is very sad, I would like to express my support for a good and polite site, with a very good mix between pros and others. SO please come back and let's start again on a good basis.

Many Thanks

Good evening everyone,

I have been shooting with Leica for 7 months now (with a 50 summicron and a 135 f/4). I have been using Tri X 400 in Paris, and in Bermuda. Could you please give me any advice for the "optimal" use for this film? In other words, how do I get the best possible results with it? Sorry if this question sounds stupid, I have a lot to learn still.

Many thanks

"No. I don't recall seeing any scenics or wildlife shots made by HCB,
and he is considered a photographer."

HCB has done some incredible scenics pictures.

Thank you very much Ralph, I appreciate your consideration, I start
to understand. That is where this group is very good at, it changes
from those wars of words that I witness too often sadly. On a
similar note, it is my understanding now that if I want to
underexpose Velvia (to add some saturation), I have to set the
sensitivity to say ASA 64.

Thank yoy for the answers but I am still confused.

Very good question. I definitly think that we put too much emphasis
on the technical quality of an image to the detriment of its
message. The question I am asking to myself before taking the
picture is: do I have something to say, to communicate? On the other
hand, I am the first one to critisise the use of digital cameras for
poor definition quality!! I contradict myself I guess. HCB in the
last few years has used a point and shoot camera. I have seen also
in the book published by Magnum on the September 11 event some
pictures taken with a point and shoot...incredible pictures.

What exactly is a finder? Is it an external addition to the camera?

I am leaving in Bermuda, so very difficult to have access to the
material.

Me again,

Can you use the 35 mm lens with the .85 magnification?...and the 28, 21?

Thanks

Frameline on teh Leica M8
in Leica and Rangefinders

I asked about the frame lines because I saw many pictures of henri cartier bresson where framing was just perfect...hard to believe that he could achieve such results with so inaccurate frame lines.
