I have a brand new original Schwalberg strap in its original packaging (small plastic bag)
that I bought new and never used. Its quite cool and I have no idea of its value. Anyone
know?

Greetings...
My father is interested in reading a book on digital photography. He has a working
knowledge of traditional photography so what he needs is a book that builds upon this
understanding.
What are the book recommendations for this soon-to-be digital photographer?
I am grateful for any and all help.

Running a Mac with OS 10.3. To run the Canon 9950f I'm using the
PhotoStudio software. When I run gang scans of 12 slides (4x6" @
300dpi) the computer will crash with a "computer must be restarted"
message. And, of course, all scans made to that point are lost.
I allocated more ram, reduced the FARE to "low"...and there are no
other programs running in the background. Though they were pretty
quick to respond, Canon support had nothing to add...nothing.
Is there any experience in here around this?
With thanks!

Is it known whether the negative carriers for the two 5400 models are
identical...or different? And if they are different are they still
interchangable between 5400's?
With thanks.

Just tried a film scan and there appears to be no issues using FARE (on "medium"). Cool.
How do I set the scanner software to scan in 48-bit?

Mendel...
Thanks for your question...I guess it isn't immediately apparent. If you look in the white
boxes, any of the shadow areas have blotchy areas that appear like sharpening
artifacts...they are not. If you look at the big box to the left, there is a cable running up
and down through the image...it goes black against the black area and develops a white
edge. In the right of that box you will also see a series of circular artifacts. In the image
on top, look in the shadow behind the front wheel of the car and the shadow area just in
front of the rear wheel. See what I mean? If you look you will see them. And they do
show up in the printed image.
I have attached a full view of the scene for what it is worth. The artifacts pepper the entire
image, these examples are to give the basic idea.
What do you think?

I recieved a new Canon 9950f last night and immediately made a test scan to see what
would happen. I scanned a 4X6" color print at the maximum resolution (1200dpi) and
noticed immediately that there were artifact issues when FARE was turned on. Is this the
way it is or am I missing something? I have not tried a negative or slide as yet and I am
hoping this is an anomaly. If it is how FARE performs then it is completely useless; worse
yet it hurts more than it helps.
Anyone have thoughts? Here are examples, the artifact areas are within the white boxes.
Thanks!

Thanks Doug...
So you are using the 4990? Is auto cropping a Silverfast function?
Any knowledge out there about the i-900?

I notice that both the Epson 4990 and Microtek i-900 come with a 35mm slide holders -
one will carry 24 slides, the other 12 slides at one time. My question is...when you scan
24 or 12 slides at a time is there a way to make 24 individual files - 1 distinct file for each
image or is it a 24 or 12 image contact sheet? If you can do it, how?
Will one scanner do it better than the other?
With many thanks in advance!

I am looking for a high end flatbed to scan original black and white photos. What is the
state of the art out there? I am looking to get as much as I can out of these prints and
would love digital ICE (if it exists for reflective scanning). My Linocolor Saphir Ultra is
having issues that may involve a repair.
Any help would be great.

Robert...
So with the 5400 you could get the whole exposed area if the carrier was filed out? Your
guess? Interesting that you could program the thing to scan for more.
Thanks,
Michael

Les...
As I suspected, the scanner will give you the "full frame" on two sides only with your
scanner. Perhaps a filed carrier might help (?). I want all of the negative I exposed to be
scanned with nothing left out.
Appreciate your help with your post, its helpful to see what you really get.

Les...
Are you 100% certain that the 5000 will scan past the exposed image area all the way
around? And I refer to negatives scanned in this scanner. Perhaps you could post a small
example?
Thanks,

I have combed the archives for information about full frame scans using the major-maker
film scanners. My current LS-2000 appears no different than the other major brands in
that it will not make a full frame scan...all the way out to the edge of the exposed part of
the image (like a filed negative carrier in a wet darkroom). I wondered if any of the other
35mm scanners provided a scan right out to the edge AND including a little bit beyond the
exposed frame. I have corresponded with a colleague about the Minolta 5400 and it too
cuts part of at least one side of the image area so its not ideal...what about the others?
Microtek 4000tf? Nikon 5000? Other?
With thanks!

Is there an online version of the EOS 1n instruction manual? Google turns up nothing and
there isn't anything in photo.net.
Thanks!

Roger...Your comment about Calumet took me by surprise, you are kidding, right? Or am I
missing something? I am a regular in Cambridge and haven't heard any buzz.
Thanks man.

Tommy...what do you mean?

Flash Bracket for Leica M and Metz handle flash...help...
in Leica and Rangefinders
Posted
I would like to mount a Leica M camera together with a Metz CT-1 (handle flash). The simple bar bracket
that comes with the Metz, while the right idea is not really secure, the Leica pivots around and doesn't stay
aligned with the flash without constant care.
What I want to do is simply have the camera and the flash together as one unit in the simplest and most
stable way possible...without going the Stroboframe route or other similar bracket. As good as they all
are it makes the package way too big to use. I want as simple a setup as I can create...just the flash and
the camera with some secure way of having them be one piece.
I have searched B&H and other resources, talked with Really Right Stuff and others and have not found
what I am looking for.
Any help or direction would be welcome.
With thanks to all.
Michael
