The FT-QL requires stopped down metering. To reach this you have to pull to the left (normally you use the medium finger of left hand) the big lever, on the body, at the right of the lens. Then you have to turn the aperture ring (when closing you will see the viewfinder screen getting darker) and/or the speed dial until the needle matchs the small circle.
You can release the lever before you actually depress the shutter release button.
