  1. Robert: I've had great luck on e-bay with used lenses. Most of the good luck comes from being very patient, hammering the sellers with questions, and going with gut feelings about buying or letting an item go.

I don't have a big budget for this, so I'm very careful with it. I've even posted specific questions here about little-known shutters and some of the older lenses that are unknown to me. (It's all unknown to me) The responses have always been very helpful and encouraging.

The debate over multi-coating is ongoing and will be forever. You just have to decide for yourself.

I suggest you pick the size lenses you want, and begin a methodical way of researching your picks for buying. It's worth the trouble. ALL of my large format and Leica SLR purchases were from e-bay and I'm very happy with the equipment. Like I said, ask the sellers lots of questions. If you're not satisfied with the answers, let it go. Ask lots of questions here, everyone is very helpful and the information pool is enormous.

It's your money. Ask Ask Ask.

  2. I'm wondering if the only way to really judge Weston's exposure method is to view the negatives and see if all the tones are there. Didn't he have a Zone of his Own to which Adams et al then developed into numbers?

I have to say I agree with those who posted responses about how different the world of photography was during and throughout Weston's career.

We wonder if we could take his early negatives and print his 'view' on modern materials. Everything was different, except that he helped lead the way to what we are today.

ps: I kinda like the dark shadows.

  3. This has been THE question with me lately, including the question of

black and white. Hate to say it, but research is in order. The

internet contains a long list of labs that are converting over the

technology you asked about. Some, such as Color Folio, have "white

papers" avaiable online to help explain the various processes. Some

will also answer questions over the phone. (Keep in mind they're in

business to MAKE money). You might try http://www.colorfolio.com/ as

a start. Ask questions. Ask for samples.

I have to agree with the previous advise that's it up to you to

    decide which "look" you like.

  4. Even the established rock bands know better. If magazines want

images, deal directly with the magazine. If the band wants promo

images, let them buy limited rights. You can also negotiate for

limited time rights: Let them do as they wish for a year or so, then

have the rights revert back to you.
