  1. Circular polarizers (CP) are required whenever some of the light

falling through the lens is diverted for metering (selective or spot)

or autofocus purposes. Since there is no autofocus with FD system

cameras, CP are mandatory for the following FD bodies: FTb, F-1 (1st

version), F-1N, T80 and T90. Of course, CP can also be used on all

    other FD system bodies.

  2. I'm not sure whether you will get decent results with a Canon FD lens

plus an aftermarket teleconverter. You will have to try...

The FD 85 mm f/1.8 is an excellent portrait lens, maybe a bit soft at

f/1.8, but so much the better for our ladies when they get a bit

older ;-). Watch the depth of field which is hardly present at such a

large aperture. No macro feature at all since the minimum focus

distance is at about 90 cm (3 ft). Great for landscapes, too, helps

    you concentrate on what's important.

  3. The 2X-A was marketed much earlier than the 2X-B. I suppose that Canon

realised that its optical formula was less appropriate for lenses with

a focal length below 300 mm. Exceptions are the 200 mm f/4 Macro where

Canon recommended using the 2X-A and the 300 mm f/2.8 L which

apparently gives better results with the 2X-B. Both converters can

also be used with zoom lenses. The 2X-A is recommended for zooms

including the 300 mm focal length.

There is also a 1.4X-A converter for fixed focal lengths of 300 mm and

higher. According to Canon it is not recommended to use it on zooms.
