1. A few years ago, I went with my photography class to one of the most

religious Jewish settlements in the West Bank, near Bethlehem, called

Bat Ayin. It's a remote, mountainous settlement in the judean hills

near Jerusalem, with an exraordinary view of the hills. I was making

a photograph of that view, when a settler came next to me on a donkey

and said: "You should have been here yesterday. The sky was cloudy

and then the sun broke through them and we were sure that the Mesiah

    had arrived!!"

  2. Andy,

I already own the 135 el nikor (the current model). What do you mean

when you say 'barley acceptable' coverage? that the lens doesn't

cover the entire 4x5 format? (it does, from my experience)or that the

is a lot of fall-off in the corners? (what I suspect could be a real

problem in large prints. Have you actually used this lens for larger

    than 20x24?

  3. Hi all,

I hope that this is not totaly off-topic, but did anyone actually seen any of Basilico's images on exhibit somewhere?

I know and admire his work only from books(the one I own is called "Cityscapes"). This book, as well as another that I once saw at a friend's, contains hundreds of photographs without any division to chapters. very dense design, that I find very appealing.

My question is, does his shows also contains somany images, how are they displayed?

    Thanks,

  4. I own a Shen-hao with black metal fininsh and the fininsh is not so good on that too. I

didn't get it from the US importer- maybe that's the reason.

Anyway, I second all that reccomended it over the tachihara. I compared mine with a

friend's tachi - let's just say that my friend is polishing his chinese...

  5. Matthew,

from my experience with BPF200 and PMK, I can say that it was not as

sharp and quite a bit more grainy than FP4+. Also, for me, the

difference in tonality compared to fp4+ in tge same soup. BPF200 for

me was nice but not briliant. (also, I hate the it's packed...)

  6. Mark,

A good option for you would be the Caltar II-N 135mm/5.6 from calumet www.calumetphoto.com

this is the same lens as the rodenstock sironar-N, even comes in a rodenstock box with a big

sticker that says "caltar"... this is a very sharp lens, has more than enough movements for

the speed-graphic, and cheaper than the rodenstock.ithink that calumethad it on sale a while

    ago, maybe they still do?

NB - this lens is very very smallin size and fold up inside the graflex with no problem.

(it also folds up inside the shen-hao i just got)

    hope this helps

  7. Larry, just rotating the back woun't do -- you have to rotate the whole camera - i.e put

your camera on the ground, then attach the tripod to the camera so that the legs form an

upside-down pyramid faceing straight towards the sky. This works best with very very

    expensive and over-built cameras.

PS - of course, this technique works only in the southern hemisphere

Please let the group know how your test with this technique worked - i'm certain that this

    will be very entertaining..

thank you for your contribution to the moral of all of us in these hard times and God bless

  8. Hi everyone,

I just got a new shen-hao 4x5 camera. very nice machine, although the finish of the metal parts is so-so. Camera is solid and good, as been metioned several times here so I don't want to repeat it.

Does someone know if I can fit it with a fresnel screen, and where to get one ?

    Thanks,

  9. Hi everyone,

I think that this question had been asked before, but I can't find any thread about it, so here we go:

can I fit my linhof angulon 90/6.8 on a copal #0 linhof/wista board, or do I need to find something with a smaller hole?

    Thanks in advance,

  10. 2 thumbs up for the initiative! If anyone needs help in Israel, drop

me a line. Be advised though, that 8x10 stuff is a special-order down

here, but I have good contacts with both Fuji, Ilford and Kodak

importers, so I think I can help..

  11. Wow, too bad it's the last camera available! this is the first time

i've seen/heard anything about this camera, and from what I saw so

far this has to be the closest camera yet to qualify as my own

personal dream-machine. Everything that I ever wanted in a camera is

there. If anyone knows of another camera hanging arounf out there for

the same price more or less, please let me know!

PS - Nathan, if you decide to get rid of it, drop me a line...

  12. I'm thinking on getting a Walker titan. If you use one, I would be

happy to know one more thing about the way it opens and closes: what

is the opening and closing sequence and what operations you need to

do to open and close it.

I thought about the toyo 45ax, but luckily had the chance to check it

out before and didn't like the way it opens and especially closes -

    very fiddley.

I like to road around the city by foot with a small pack and tripod.

When I feel like making a picture I like to setup quickly and fold

    down just as quick.

    Thanks everyone for the reply,

  13. Josh,

One lens that you can look at is 90mm Schneider Angulon. It is very

small comparing to newer designs of wide-angle lenses, cover entire

4x5 without movements and sharp when closed down. Plenty of

information about it on th net.

One problem - I feel that these lenses are usualy over-priced. I once

saw one from a linhof sell for 550$ w/o lensboard. I got mine from

Midwest photo www.mpex.com, payed very reasonable price.

    Hope it helps,

  14. Hello to everybody,

I'd like to get some advise concerning folding 4x5 field cameras that can be folded with a lens (specificly my favorite 135mm/5.6 Rodenstock sironar-N). If anyone knows about any camera that can do this (not including the press-type cameras i.e graflex and linhof), please let me know.

    TIA

  15. I use these tans a little differently than what Jobo says: I fill the

tank all the way to the to with 1350ml of solution and agitate by

turning the tank upside down like I do with the steel tanks I use for

smaller formats. I insert the reel with 6 sheets and the

black "wings" in the tank with the developer in the dark, then close

the lid and agitate for a minute, then 10 sec every minute. This

works fine with no spots or marks on the sheets. I use pyrocat HD and

Rodinal, two very cheap developers so I don't mind the extra volume.

I don't know what the 'experts' will say about this method, but I got

my negatives to porve me right. Hope this helps, and good luck.
