Petri Color 35, 1968 version. They regularly show up on E-Bay in VG condition for $100- $150. It has a 40mm/2.8 lens, fully manual with a simple rangefinder, and is built like a tank.
Either that, or an Olympus Stylus Epic. As was mentioned, it is not fully manual, but exactly the opposite. Fully automatic. But the 35/2.8 Zuiko lens on it has taken some of the sharpoest photos I have, AND it has a spot meter, something very nice to have when shooting slides. Plus it fits in a shirt pocket.

Microtek i900. $540 @ bhphoto.com + a $50 rebate from Microtek until 9/30/05= $489.95.
An awesome scanner for 4 X 5.

Ben,
Thanks for taking the time to measure your filters. My Summarit measures exactly 43mm outside diameter, just like the Leica 7th Ed. Pocket Book says. And Paul, you say your "X" version did not fit your 39mm lenses. Was it too large or too small ?
Thanks again everyone.
-
Excellent. Thanks for the info. The 13352 has a 42mm slip on for the E39 filter size lenses.
The Summarit has a 43mm slip on with a threaded inside filter diameter of 41mm. Does anyone think the X version will fit the 43mm slip on ? Maybe that is the difference ? 1 mm ? X for "extra ? You think ?
-
Okay, I searched the archives and did not come up with a definitive
answer for this one, so.....
I believe the 13352 "plain" version of this swing out polarizer is a
42mm slip on for the 39mm thread lenses. But the "X" version of this
polarizer. Is it also slip-on or threaded ?
If it is threaded, then what lens thread diameter ?
If slip-on, for what outside diameter ?
I am looking for a polarizer for my 50/1.5 Summarit and I thought
this one may fit the bill.
Can someone check their Leitz accessory history books for me ?
Greatly appreciated.
TIA and toodles.

Interesting reading. I did not plan on shooting B & W.
I shoot primarily Provia 100F & 400F.
So I guess the Skylight 1A is the better choice for color ?
-
I am going to the Grand Canyon in Sept and I plan on bringing my M6
& M6TTL, several lenses and Universal Polarizer.
My question is, which type filter is better for cutting haze ?
Skylight 1A or a UV ? Does the polarizer help in cutting haze as
well ? I understand the Canyon has a very bad haze problem lately
due to pollutants and global warming.
TIA

To me, the more important issue was VF magnification. If you use mainly wide angles like the 28 and 35, get the TTL in .58 finder mag. Especially if you wear eyeglasses. There is nothing like it. If not the .72 in Classic or TTL is fine. If your main lens is the 50 and you also use the 90 quite a bit, then the .85 in either flavor will suit you well.
In my experience, yes, the larger shutter dial on the TTL is more intuitive when composing and setting exposure on your shot, since you can change shutter speeds with your right index finger without taking your eye off the VF, and it follows the more logical "direction" of the led's for indicating under and overexposure. That coupled with the fact that the TTL is the newer breed of camera, again, IMO, gives the TTL the edge.

Rafael,
Does the newer 13356 also come with a built-in lens shade ?
-
Excellent, excellent excellent guys. s usual, precisely the info I requested has been provided...I hope to one day return the favor... now the question is (chin stroking motion).... which to get...
the 13352... or 13356... hm-m-m-mmmmm. I am not particularly fond of the screw in adapter idea, which I abandoned the Cokin system....
but then again... you have the option of using on other diameter lenses other than the 42mm.... I guess my last question is ...
May I assume the glass in both types is of equal quality, or will the "newer" Universal Polarizer have the better quality glass due to later and better engineering and manufacturing processes ?
-
Interesting. So, the 13352 is a slip-on over-the-lens only for lenses with 42mm outside diameter. The 13356 "Universal" however, can take "adapter rings" like the Cokin system I suppose, however,
the Universal is screw-in to the filter thread only.
Do I have this right ?

Greetings all once again and I humbly request a simple answer from
the vast tank of Leica knowledge present here on the forum.
Will the 13352 swing out polarizer work on all 3 of my vintage Leica
lenses ? I have a 35/2.8 Summaron, 50/2.8 Elmar, and the 90/2.8
Elmarit.
I believe all 3 have 39mm filter threads and an exterior front
barrel diameter of 42mm. I am pretty sure it will work on the 50 and
90, but my concern is vignetting on the 35.
Also, does that filter screw in or slip over the exterior of the
front of the lens ? Anybody ?
As always, Thanks.

Thanks everyone for your input. I knew about the Photo Equip. Corp. crank, but I am not that enthused about paying $100 for a tiny little piece of machined aluminum, hence I was looking for the cheaper alternative, namely the Wasserman. I recall paying about $30 for mine.
Ed,
Thanks for suggesting the mediajoy.com "Japanese" solution
I am pursuing that approach and have contacted the co. via e-mail to find out if they ship to U.S. and what the charges are.

Anyone know if Richard Wasserman still manufactures or sells his
M2/M3 rewind crank ?
I have a chrome one on my M2 and I now I would love a second one for
my M3. I shot an e-mail off to Mr. Wasserman a few days ago to the e-
mail address on the plastic jar that it came in and I never got a
reply. However, I never got a bounce back either.
Wasserman crank, anybody ? Still available or no ?
TIA

Incredible. Thank you for the quick replies, everybody !
I know I can always get the most accurate explanations on this Leica forum here at photo.net.

Greetings all,
I just received my user beater M3 with 50 Elmar and I have a few
questions, if anyone has the patience to answer.
1. what is the purpose of the infinity lock ?
2. What is the purpose of the "collapsible" part of the lens ?
The rangefinder focus appears to work the same whether the lens is
collapsed "in" or fully extended. Can it be used either way ? Or is
it extended strictly for macro use ?
and 3.
I noticed in my "new" "vintage" beat-to-crap user '59 M3, the VF &
rangefinder patch is nice and bright. When I just have the 50
frameline up, the patch is perfectly centered. When I bring up
either the 90 or 135 framelines (which appear as a nice faint sharp
yellow), the patch appears centered horizontally, but vertically, it
appears slightly higher than center. I should reiterate by saying
the patch itself does not move postion, but rather the 90 and 135
framelines appear lower in relation to the center area surrounding
the patch than when just the 50 frameline is up. Is this normal or
not and will it affect my framing ? The film advance is very smooth
and the shutter speeds seem pretty on the money to my eye and ear.
TIA as always, you guys are always great and generous with the
info.

I see this item periodically up for sale.
Has anyone here bought one of these ?

This appears to be an aftermarket thing made in Germany or does it
look like a genuine Leica kit ? I am looking for a solution for my
M2 after being spoiled by the M6 loading. It does not appear to have
the same type take up spool as the M6.
Or would I be better off taking the "spare take up spool" route and
preloading a couple of rolls and keeping them wrapped in foil ?
Any suggestions, comments, etc. would be welcome....
TIA, Toodles, and Happy 4th everybody !

Geez,
I had no idea the level of interest my question would provoke. It seems that people are passionate about their M2's ! Mine, BTW, (the '65 w/o the ST that started this thread) is a lever rewind. So it appears that at least one person who wrote in actually has an M2 the same vintage as mine w/o a ST and the concensus seems to be that yes, the M2 was made with or w/o ST throughout most of it's production run. This answered my original question.
Thanks to all who wrote and gave their input !
-
Was the M2 available with or WITHOUT self timer throughout it's 10
year production run ?
I bought an early '65 vintage M2 (s/n 1107xxx) in good user
condition, but it does not have a self timer. The only thing I have
read concerning S.T.'s on the M2 seems to indicate all were made
with S.T.'s after 1960 or so. True ? Not true ? Or do I have a
rarity or a "re-badged" earlier M2 ?
TIA as always.

Sure, E-Bay started the death knell for brick & mortar stores. As a business owner nowadays, who in their right mind would want to maintain high rent in a Manhattan location, plus pay a staff of 3 or 4 people with benefits ? Unless you're the WalMart or Target of the camera retail world, e.g. B & H or Adorama.
Ken, BTW, is not out of business. He still does business the way most of us do, the 21st Century way, from his kitchen table in his skivvies, with a computer and a phone in front of him.

Tony,

Excellent. Thanks Rolfe !

When purchased new, is the diffuser included or is it optional ?

Super Symmar 110XL on 8 X 10 ?

Does anyone have any real world experience with this lens on 8 X 10 ?
I know Schneider officially rates the image circle as only covering
up to 5 X 7,
however I have heard Schneider is rather conservative in their specs.
Thanks.
