I used to be an advanced amateur, employing motor armatures
to focus my AF Nikkors. Now that I switched to Leica, I am a
regular amateur because I use left handed arm-a-turns to focus
my MF Summicrons. Not to mention shutters speed selection.
Is that a step backwards or what? If I get an M7, I'm note sure
what kind of amateur I'll be.

Folks, please don't run Eve off. Her experience and frankness are most
welcome, not to mention her equipment choice is very much on-topic.
Eve, tell us more, post some of your work.

I just scratched the Voightlander 90mm off my list of possible
lenses.

How about one of you Leica accessory venders building use one of these:

A little metal device that slides into an M6 hot shoe and that flips down over the front of the camera (no drilling required) and provides three simple functions. One: Makes a little hood over the viewfinder window to protect it from smudges. Two: makes a little hood over the rangefinder window to protect it from smudges. Three: has a little window the covers the frameline illummination window that shades the center of it to prevent that annoying finder flare problem, while still allowing the frame lines to be illuminated. Extra bonus too! It covers the oft dreaded red Leica logo.

I'd give $25 for a well made unit such as this.
Please explain this whole M7 AE thing to me again???

Well Glenn, you inquiry is fair and points to a disadvantage ot AE
in the Leica M7. Of course, the answer is to switch the shutter
speed dial to the desired shutter speed and shoot away.
