I've bought 30d 3 weeks back and testing out features of this camera.
One thing I've noticed is it doesn't whether I used 100mm f2.8
macro,or 50 f1.8 or 28-135usm IS or any F stop for that matter.
When I zoomed in 10x to review the pictures. Its always blurry not
sharp as I expected even if I set sharpness to 5,6 or 7.
I've tried shooting it with tripod on timer and nothing seems to
improve the image quality. Maybe I am expecting too much out of this
as this is my digital camera and it is a 8.2 megapixcel camera.
My question is is this normal as image quality goes when you zoomed
in this close or I am just making too much out of nothing?
By the way that goes for all iso setting as well from 100 to 800.

Just a dumb question here with regarding to lens filter for ef 17-40
f4.0L. Can you use any filter mounted to front of the lens without
any effect or this lens is designed rear mounted only?
If its rear mounted then how do you protect the lens?
Thanks

I am looking at getting a used ef 17-35 f2.8L usm. I know it is
a professional len. I am just wondering when this len was
made as the new designation is 16-35? Has anyone had any experience
with this len who can offer opinion such as quality, durability, etc.
Thanks

Its unfortunate that canon would not replace the shutter free of charge. I've had my 28-135 is usm died on me one month after the
warranty expired and canon canada fixed my len for free of parts and labour.

I use ai servo usally with single centre focus at my inteneded target and pan the camera along as the subject moves away no matter which direction. The camera will automatically re-focus on the subject at
the selected focusing point as long as you pan your camera with the subject and as long as the ambient condition is bright and you have a "USM" lens.
When i take a picture with kid playing, I try to focus on the kid
eye and pan along and make sure my selected focus stay on the eye
no matter where the kid is moving. This ensure that when I click
the camera the focus stay focus on the eye. The reason I do it this way also is I like to take picture with background blurred and my len wide open.

I want to thank all of you who've responded with your opinion and comments. I certainly will get ettl2 dslr as I have horrendous time with elan 7 and ettl wireless flash. I find the results are not predictable at all. I will wait until the end of the year to find out
the new 20d. If it is a big change I'll get 20d and if its not, then rebel xt. I really hate a camera with a small body.
-
I have st-e2,580ex and 550ex. I think I can set fec with speedlite and
second curtin will not work with st-e2.

I believe Canon has been manufacturing 35mm camera for quite sometime and there have some 50 types of lens made for 35mm film camera and a lot photographers out there professional and amateurs alike have stock
up few lenses for 35mm camera. I just don't see why canon will not strive to make now and future dlsr move suited to 35mm equivalent.
I am sure 35mm will eventually become the thing of the past but for now, in MHOP 35mm is here to stay.
-
The time I consider dslr technology is mature is the time when canon manufacture entry level dlsr with 35mm film equivalent without any
crop factor.

I am considering getting digital rebel as my first dslr. I know
there are better dlsr out there with d20,d1s,etc. I want to get into
dslr at this time just to improve my wireless photography. To me
dslr technology is not quite mature yet. so to buy better and more
expensive one is pointless since I don't want to spend that kind of
money just yet knowing three years down the line, There'll be a better
dslr and more equivalent to 35mm at more affordable price.
My question is If I just want to improve my wire less flash
photographing skills with dslr. Does any one object to using first
digital(6.3MP)rebel. as a starter? The way I see it 1.6x camera is
here to stay for a while until Nikon,Minolta, pentax pushes the
technology ahead. At current pace, I don't see that's happening as
Nikon just came out with 1.6x 6 Mp d70s dslr.
I believe rebel dlsr is compatible with st-e2,and has wire less flash
capability. Other than 6.3mp and no mirror lock up and no custom
functions. Can someone please tell me what are the advantages and
disavantages of using digital rebel?. I know 20d is better but
I can buy a 17-40L lens with rebel for the price of one 20d. Few years
down the line digital rebel and 20d will be absolete just like the
first dlsr d30.

Hello
Does anyone know if there is a lens hood larger than EW-78bii for 28-
135mm usm is.? The problem with EW-78bii is that anytime I add two
72mm Tiffen filter in front of the len, it creates a vignetting
effect. Is there a third party or from canon that will fit this lens.
Thanks

I read the spec. features for new Rebel xt in www.dpreview.com
that one of the accessories is st-e2. I take that new rebel is
capable of wireless flash photography. Is this a misprint or has
anyone bought one yet and tested out its capability.

I was using 400 film and my group shot was only about 8 feet away.
I was on tv mode 1/20 and f5.6

I took several pictures with an elan7 and 580ex with focal length set
at 28mm accidently set to slave mode. I didn't realize the mistake
I've made until I've noticed on 580ex lcd displaying 24mm manual
zoom. I have not finish the whole roll of film yet, has anyone made
the same mistake I did and know what is the consequences of this?
Would it effect the exposure drastically and screw up the picture or
not.?
my quess is it will not since it is ettl metering.
Thanks for any comments.
-
shouldn't the preflash from the master to trigger the slave is so light that the flash meter would not register the same exposure as
the slave flash.?
-
I hope someone can help me figuring out what I've done wrong here to
shut off master speedlite with either 580ex on my elan7eqd and 550ex
as slave. I mounted 580ex on my camera and set it to master and
proceed to turn off the flash as per the manual instruction. I set
the 550ex to slave mode and checked the set up to be the same.
when I take a picture and both master and slave goes off and I check
the reading with flash meter on the master speedlite it has similar
flash reading as well. I've tried both way with 550ex as master and
580ex as slave, still same result.
I checked my speedlite and can see that z type symbol is blinking
indicating the master flash is off as noted in the manual.
Can someone let me know I've missed.?
Thanks

I've had a problem with my canon 28-125usm is lens about a year ago. Just as the warranty expired for a little over a month. The zoom
was stuck and it wouldn't rotate. I took it canon service center
near where I live in Mississauga, ontario. The guy at the front
desk looked at it and told me They'll fix it for no charge. I would
take it canon service centre and I hope they fix yours for no fee.
Good luck

When I first bought my rebel g and took several rolls of films and I
didn't like the outcome of the built in flash so I bought 380ex.
It has no manual control just like the 420ex but It is ettl flash.
I thought it's was the best thing in the world the pictures come out great I thought at the time. the more pictures I took the more I want to improve my photos. I found that everytime when I want to fill in flash on overcast day the ettl flash always overexpose the subject
to my liking. I cannot control the outcome of the flash with 380ex.
Even with ettl or ettl2, There is limitation of the flash and camera metering. Having full control of your camera and flash allows you
to make adjustment to your liking.
-
don't buy 420ex. it has no manual control and you'll end up regretting
it. the new 580ex has white card build in for bounce flash and manual control. its lot more fun for you to experiment with your 20d where with 420ex you don't control over the outcome of the flash.
If you gonna spend the kind of money to buy 20d you might as well get 580ex or just get the basic digital rebel for 420ex.

I can rest assure you that despite whatever document that saids
elan 7 work with st-e2 for flash ratio. I tested it myself with
sekonice l-358 flash meter that the ratio do not work on my
elan 7eqd body. elan7eqd was manufactured and released after eos3
and st-e2.
-
I've just spoke to canon support again, but differenet guy. I
was told with 420ex,550ex with st-e2 as master on 20d will not
be able to set ratio on st-e2 unless 420ex and 550ex are
hard wired together which I find that a complete nonesense.
However he did say if you have 20d with 2 550ex or better (580ex)
and st-e2 as the master, flash ratio on st-e2 will work.
The best thing for you to do is before you buy st-e2, you should go
the store and test st-e2 with your camera 10d and 420ex and 550ex see
you can adjust flash ratio.
without flash ratio on st-e2 is just a pain in the ass as you need
to walk over to ajust your 550ex or 580ex. but it is even more dissapointing when you have no real control over the stuff you
bought and paid a lot for it that's why I got rid of my 420ex and got
580ex. its lot more fun to have complete control over the outcome.
Good luck.
-
yes. I was told by canon support st-e2 ratio settings will not work
on 20d as i was contemplating buying 20 myself. my st-e2 manual says
it was design for eos-3 camera only.
The ratio can be ajusted through manual flash exposure compensation on
550ex or 580ex only but not on 420ex since 420ex has no manual control. I simply just turn the st-e2 ratio off since it doesn't work on elan 7 body.
with 580ex flash i bought i still use st-e2 to trigger 550ex and 580ex with ratio turn off on st-e2. my 580ex is now set as the main
light and 550ex as the fill light. If I want 2 stop less on the fill
light, I simply set my 550ex with -2 fec.
Perhaps anyone who has the same system I do has differ.
-
I have an elan 7eqd with 420ex,st-e2,550ex. I wanted to set up studio
type photography. I tried many time to change ratio between 420ex and 550ex with st-e2 mounted on my camera. But the picture just
didn't come out what I thought it should be. the light always seem
the same to me until I've read the st-e2 manual carefully. The "ratio
setting does not work" with elan7 camera. I've called canon tech support 1-800-ok-canon. they told me the ratio setting doesn't work on the latest 20d digital camera either. I was pissed so I've traded my 420ex for 580ex. Now i can set flash compensation to offset
ratio setting on st-e2.
I've taken pictures with 580ex and 550ex as slave with fec. It's coming out beautifully.
You could use 420ex as the main light and 550ex as the fill in light.
but the 420ex guideno is smaller.
My understanding of the main use of st-e2 is design for higher end camera eos3 or higher.
The only thing that is good for with st-e2 on lower end camera is small, light on weight on camera and sets off e-ttl signal to slaves
flash. soon as you turn on the camera it is on ettl mode, cannot
use as manual flash completly.

I was using the camera all day and it was working fine. The only thing
that I've done prior to shutting down was I reloaded new reala film.
In fact I did take two pictures and then gave it to brother in law
and it stopped working. No one dropped the camera or banged into anything.
canon 30d problem with remote switch 80n3-rs
in Canon EOS Mount
Posted
I have a problem my canon 30d with 80n3-rs remote switch not triggering the
shutter when I depressed the button. It does focus with canon 17-40L usm lens
but it would turn over the shutter. Does anyone know this is the camera or the
remote switch before I take it to service? If it is remote problem, I'll just
buy a new switch. Has anyone encountered the same problem before?
