  1. Jack the quick load spool to convert M1 to M3 to the more modern

style is Leica part#14260. However there is a problem using it on the

M3 as you must remove the take up spool in order to reset the frame

counter. A old newspaper photographer told me that to speed up the

process they just carried extra M3 spools. The film preloaded and

carried them in those plastic containers people used to protect there

cigarets and keep them dry. Also if you install the quick load spool

you must modify the base plate by installing the little plastic tulip.

  2. All cameras have built in obsolescence even all mechanical.Try and

get a clutch assey for a M3 DS it seems thet cameras that rely on

electronics are built with a great deal shorter life expectancy then

others. My close friend is having fits with his $4000+ not even three

year old D1 the repair cost is estimated so high it is a waste of

money to fix it. However out of the goodness of Nikons heart they are

willing to give him a $500 trade up for it on a new D1X. Thats why

when I see someone wishing for a digital M I wonder if they even have

a clue. You could not get me to trade a old beater M-4P for one. At

least in five years it will take a photo. Want a hard sell try and

get someone to give you $100 for a computer with a 286-20processor in

it. GOOD LUCK! Japanese camera companys have found the holy grail and

it is. The replacement for the newest, fastest, and best, is on the

drawind board and its replacement is in the final stages of planning.

Pro's yes! They have to stay ahead of the curve in order to make a

living. The only thing that I see digital as excelling at in amateur

photography is instantaneous gratification. Also the ability to let

someone who could not get published if they owned the magazine to do

    themselves.

SO much for todays rant tune in next week for the continuous saga of

    crusty old fart.

  3. Hard to picture not being able to find a pro lab in Manhatten. I can

remember getting 3 hour turn around on Kodachrome there. However you

may have a hard time finding a inexpensive pro lab. Then again I hear

business has been way down since 911. Try

  4. Seth the sholder strap shohld go all the way across the bottom and up

the sides that way the weight of the bag and contents are supported

by the strap not the bag. This way the weight is distributed over a

larger area and not concentrated at the point where the strap is

attached to the bag.Helps beef up the bottom and cuts down on

bellying and compressing the top, when you only have one or two

    heavier items in the bag.

  5. Forgot for prolong use leave the rear door up put the bottom back on

and get a locking type of shetter release. You can even mount the

camera to a tripod. This set up allows you to check the accaracr of

your range finder and the depth of field of any lense at any F stop

by simply using a tape measure and three targets. Place one at a set

distance from the film plane focus. Then place the other targets one

in front and one behind the focused target move them until they reach

the break point where they begin to go soft. Have fun. OH don't try

this at infinity how fer can you walk?

  6. Alfie what the hell were you testing! There are only 480 minutes in

eight hours. There are 540 exposures on 15 rolls of 36 exposure film

that means you are measuring the light setting the proper appature

and shutter speed, focusing the lense, composing the pictere, pressing

the shutter release, and advencing the film about every 50

seconds. This is not even takeing into account loading and unloadind

film. For some strange reason I don't think that is what they had in

mind when they talk about a Leica Moment. TO be honest with you I

don't think I want to see the photos. When someone tells you the only

way to become a better photographer is to take more photos this is

not what they have in mind. When I took my very first photography

class the following was written on the chalk board when I entered the

room.( To become a better photographer. THINK! Focus. Compose.

Expose. Develope. Print. If this sounds too simple check back with me

in about thirty years.) Almost forty five years have gone by and I am

    still working on it.

  7. Tell uh what sunny boy ifin uh gets urself a real lika she dont got

nun fo them logo things. Aint got no stinkin batteries nether.

Seriously 3M electric tape will work great on any of the chrome

bodies. Dont rocomend it if you have a black paint though and would

not use any type of solivent on it.

  8. Today I attended a camera show in Toledo Ohio. To my suprise there were 3 Leitz Focomat V 35 Enlargers for sale there. They were all sold in a matter of an hour I purchased the best one for $250 the other two went for $200 each. Now for the problem when they werw taken out of service and placed in storage the lamp assemblys were removed not just the bulb the entire unit.Anyone have any clue as to where I might find parts.Any help will be appreciated.
  9. Hope you bought gray market even then you will be luckey to get 70

cents on a dollar when you sell. Welcome to the wonderful world of

impulse buying.Good luck, been there did that. You may want to buy a

frame and put your sales receipt in it. Along with a photo copy of

the bill of sale to who ever you sell it to. Hang this in a

conspicuous place to vaccinate yourself from futer attacks. Warning

the vaccine is not always effective.

  10. Simple answer. From the seventies on Leica has not been in the camera

business so much as the legend business. They are basicaly living off

the name and in order to do that they must keep the Leica name in the

public memory. Leica is in fact a optical instrument company, alwaye

were and will continue to be. Leica geo systems, medical optics, high

end optics for the secondary market.Who make botique cameras for the

affluent.Don't get me wrong there is nothing bad about this in fact

the up side of this is that they are in a constant process of

improving there optics with little regard to the platform. The

american counter part to this is Coors . How many people know Coors

make more money off ceramics than beer.
