Hi all,
I just got a new 18-200 VR and while i am happy with the image quality compared
to my now-retired 18-70mm, i have a couple of newbie questions about this lens:
1) How do i see evidence of this VR functionality? I hear the VR gyros working,
but at handheld speeds, i can barely tell any difference at all with the VR on
or off when reviewing the image on the LCD.
My settings. AF-S, Program mode, ISO 200, mid-to-tele range, VR on Normal,
Metering usually reads 1.5 at f5.6.
2) Noises: the AF noise is a little high-pitched squeal compared to my old
18-70. Can anyone corroborate? It feels like it needs a lubing inside! Its not
loud, but it does not feel smooth.
Finally, i do not understand this paragraph from Petr Vodnak's site:
"Personally I use the AF-ON button to focus as this saves the VR until I need
it. Once the image is in focus, I press the shutter button halfway. This
activates the VR and you will see the image stabilize in the viewfinder.
By AF-ON, does he mean the shutter release? or the AF switch on the camera body
side? I am guessing the former, but my assumption is that when you half-depress
the shutter, but the AF and the VR stabilization happen at the same time?
Many thanks in advance,

Do you folks calibrate your monitors in complete darkness? I was advised to do so....

Anyone have this combination? I need a little help with using the eye one in the
Advanced settings mode. I must say the eye one software is definitely not the
most usable s/w out there. Anyone else feel the same?

Thanks all, i guess it is time i simply pony up the Cash for an EyeOneD2

Hi all,
I have finally managed to acquire all the components of my digtal
darkroom...slr, lens, epson r2400, 24" samsung 244t, Intel Mac.
Now the last step before i start getting productive is to calibrate the monitor
and the EyeOne Display 2 is highly recommended on here, but i somehow hesitate
to shell out almost $200 for a tool that i may use maybe 2 times. I called
around in the san francisco y area to see if any of the shops rent it out and
none do (software installation being a no-no).
Any advise other than to suck it up and shell out the $? maybe i'll post to
craigslist and ask if anyone wants to share the love...

I'll beg to differ from some fo the folks here. My r2400 used to need a nozzle clean every 2-3 weeks. since then i've asked around and been told to simply leave the printer on and print every now and then 1-2 a week. i have been doing that and no clogs so far. prints are great. love this printer.

Thanks guys, i ordered the spongeless refilled from MIS. Waiting eagerly to test it out. I hope it works out nicely - i can get more liberal with my printing.
-
Should be no problem at all. My friend is driving a 23" acd with his macbook pro
I am driving at 244t with at 17" mbp
-
Thanks for the quick response guys!
I think i'll go wht MIS and test it out. I am a little nervous, but hopefully it should all be ok.
So, are you both saying that either 1) or 2) option should be the same spongeless, re-fillable cartridges? Did you order the 4oz bottles at the same time?

Hi all
I have an epson 2400 and have been pretty happy with its output. However, the
cost of ink is a little too much for me. I have been thinking of using MIS K4
inks. Reviews seem to be satisfactory.
However, my researching yeilded two different types of MIS cartridges:
1) R2400 CARTRIDGE SET (9) FILLED WITH MIS K4 COLOR INKS
and
2) Prefilled Spongeless MIS K4 Cart Set (9) with Matte (Eboni) and Photo Black -
Refillable for Epson R2400 printer
Both are priced at $98.00. Am wondering if there is a decided advantage in going
with the spongeless-refillable cart set (2)?
Also, the website does not say what quantities of ink are in the MIS carts vs
the regular epson OEM carts? How may 8 x 10 prints can i look forward to from
MIS carts? they seem to be 4oz? not sure.
Many thanks and i hope to hear from those that have used MIS inks in the past.

Thanks Bill. the epson r3400 i have has some sort of a roll holder, i'll see how it works. i do not yet undertand fully your explanation about substrates and such. I'll examine it more carefully.

Cades Cove is simply the most spectacular landscape i have ever seen in the US. I have not traveled far and wide enough i guess, but this is tops. It closes at sundown so you might want to go early. heavy traffic.

Hey all,
So i just got my r2400 epson and am loving the prints. However i am fairly new
to the game and am looking to start experimenting with paper, inks slowly.
For starters, what are the differences in getting 8x10 or 4x6 ROLL paper vs
sheet paper for the same dimensions? I am primarily concerned about cost vs
convenience.
2) I hear many people mention using larger (110 or 220 ml) k3 ink cartridges
from the larger epson printers in an effort to save $ on inks for the 2400. And
then there are CIS systems etc that people talk about. What is the current
thought in saving $ for epson recommended inks? What is the least expensive way
to save money while still using epson inks?
many thanks in advance,

Hi all,
I have just purchased an R2400 off of ebay and am excited to see the first
prints. But how do i tell how many prints the printer has already made? Is there
a way at all?

All,
I am seeking advise on the idea of purchasing studio equipment, whether or not
it makes sense for me as a non-professional. I have a regular job that i dont
intend to quit for photography. I have taken a few classes in portraiture and
studio lighting and want to try it out at some length, on my own. I am
especially interested in fashion portraiture and have zero experience in it.
I currently own a d70, sb600, a few lens, tripod.
I just added the epson 2400 printer to complete my workflow arsenal.
IF i decided i want to do portraiture as a hobby (and i am undecided), then i am
looking at a $1000 investment as far as my desired equipment (alienbees digibee
package + backdrops + etc)
My question is, while i probably could recover 1/3rd to 1/2 the cost of the
equipment with a few sittings for friends and family, what else could i do with
a studio setup that could help me further my skills? I am not particularly
looking to recover $ invested in the studio, but it would be great if i could
justify it as a skill-based investment and a casual freelance hobby.
Please advise,

Sekonic L308 bII. I paid around $120 for it a couple of years ago. It meters flash as well. Read the reviews for this little nugget and you will be surprised.

Pablo, my d70 always had the slight creak -even from day one. i simply forgot about it.
-
you might want to look athe the Tamrac Velocity 9. it will fit your current requirements and have some spare space for a bottle of water or so. i have one and it is pretty good, though the padding is a little less firm than when i bought it. but i have abused it pretty well.
-
There is also the Rover AW Plus that i have. Well padded and good. I think it is the biggest of the Rover series. I find the camera section good, but the daypack portion is just a tad small. Notice that there are not enough pockets on the outside of the AW Plus. just one good one, and two tight ones.

Edward,
thats a terrific idea! You bet i will have it on my back the whole way through. Luckily this is a single stop flight and should nto pose a problem at different terminals.
-
I just ordered one and would prefer it to be carryon. This is an
international flight.I can easily keep the weight under control, but
am concerned about the dimensions. The Rover II AW was a close
consideration, but i needed the extra space in the top compartment.
Thanks in advance!

$200 is what i bought my mint 18-70 for from eBay. It was a good deal i think and am pretty happy with the lens.
