  1. On holidays now in Turkey and have a persistant dark spot problem with my 20D. Noticable mainly on skys top right corner..

Tried everything to remove it including compressed air from a camera shop.

Looks like with only one week left I will not get the problem solved untill I get home and may need to send it into Canon. This is a real heartbreaker since I wll now need to use photoshop on my hundreds of photos to remove the speck.

  2. I've got the original Digital Rebel (EOS-300D?) and have been very happy with it but am

    considering upgrading to the XT; my question is;

Are the B & W and colour filter options internal to the Rebel xt just a gimmick which are

    better

applied later in Photoshop, or are these functions actually worthwhile?

I'd appreciate some photo examples uploaded showing the B & W function being used

when the photo was taken. Perhaps a couple of photos of the colour filter options would

also be helpfull, although B & W is my main interest.

  3. Thanks for those tips & links. A several more questions for clarification (bear with me &

my inexperience with filters) - these questions are related to outdoor portraits...

    - I have a POLARIZING FILTER for my 28-135 IS lens, I take it that this is NOT the same as

    NEUTRAL DENSITY FILTER (NDF).

-What do you mean by a 4x neutral density filter? can you give me a model #

-If I want to create that "dreamy-soft-focus" for outdoor portraits and blur things like

water falls (without using a tripod) and create dramatic orangish-red clouds during sunset

    what is the best choice

of a NDF? What's the model # and brand I should consider? Do I need more than one?

    (I'm on a limited budget)

-If I want to take a portrait of a family standing in some tall grass, which is moving in the

wind, and want the grass blurred, without using a tripod, what would be a good Tv (used

with Tv priority?) and would the NDF help to acheive this affect?

-I just bought a LumiQuest Pocket Bouncer to be used with my 420EX flash; can this work

together with a NDF for outdoor portraits?

  4. I'm using a Canon 450 FE flash with the original

Digital Rebel and want to do some outdoor portraits mainly along the beach.

I understand that it is important to have the source of the flash off center from the

camera to avoid the "deer in the headlights" affect on your subject. How far off center

    does it need to be??

Could I just aim the flash 45 degrees towards the sky and install a white card overhanging

    the top of

the flash to allow the relflected light off the flash to be off the vertical center of the camea?

or does the flash need to be off the horizontal center of the camera?

An extra infrared adapter costs about $200 in order to put the flash on a tripod.

Then the flash could be put at any distance from the subject you want but I suppose this

means needing to calibrate the distance of the flash from your subject??? OR..

What about a camera mounted extension arm for the flash?

Are these awkward to use if you want to turn your camera 90 degrees to go

from portrait to the landscape position?

    All comments appreciated!!

  5. I'd like to hear from someone who owns the Epson P-2000 digital

wallet. Are you happy with it? Is it easy to use? Would you

    recommend it?

I understand that it will accept raw images as well as video clips

and will also store and play MP3's and that each pixel in the

display screen, contains its own RGB, making for very sharp images.

Is the MP3 player and it's menu intuitive? Does it allow you to

    organize MP3's by genre?

I would need an adapter in order for the unit to also accept SD

    cards rather than just CF's.

Is anyone using such a SD card adaptor with it, any problems? Does

the epson p-2000 write images from the memory card to it's hard

drive at an acceptable speed? Does jarring the unit cause stored

images to be corrupted or lost?

Thanks for any feedback on this unit.

  6. Searched dcpreview and the radioshack site but couldn't find anything about their digital wallet which you mention... If it doesn't have USB2 it might be painfully slow to download. Maybe you could cross the gobe desert in a faster time than it takes to download it... Somebody should start up a jpeg storage device rental service for that one time a year that you need the capacity..
  7. I'm leaving for a 5 week holiday and for the first time, going

digital (SLR). I'm agonizing as to whether to spend the $700 CDN

req'd for a 20 gig digital wallet that I will only need once a year.

Since I'm backpacking, bringing a lap top is not an option.

My question is; has anyone travelled to Eastern Europe lately

(Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia) and noticed if the internet cafe's have

the capibility to save your JPEG photos onto CD's? I would probably

bring my SanDisk CF card reader. (bit of a hassle). Perhaps film

development shops would save your JPEGS onto a CD for you??

    PS

I already have an MP3 player but it doesn't take JPEGS (Creative

Nomad)so don't want to buy another Mp3 player such as the "Ipod" or

the RCA version shown in the link below:

  8. I don't have an answer to your question but was looking for a DW thread for suggestions to my own dilemma.

I'm leaving for a 5 week holiday and for the first time, going digital (SLR). I'm agonizing as to whether to spend the $700 - $800 CDN req'd for a 20 gig digital wallet that I will only need once a year.

Since I'm backpacking, bringing a lap top is not an option, and I already have an MP3 player but it doesn't take JPEGS (Creative Nomad)so am not thrilled about buying another one that does take JPEGS. Below is a link the the RCA mp3 player, has anyone tried it for JPEG storage, and how compatible is it with Windows XP?

Also, has anyone travelled to Eastern Europe lately (Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia) and noticed if the internet cafe's allow you to burn your photos onto CD's? That would mean bringing along my SanDisk CF card reader. (bit of a pain..)

  9. I've got the Canon D rebel and have been experimenting with the 28-135 IS before I take the combo to Eastern Europe this May. I've been hand-holding the lens on occasion at 1/30" (quite a novelty)and getting some sharp shots. I'm very happy with the lens so far but am a little concerned over the size & weight of it for travelling purposes. My other 2 lenses I'll be taking are the 50mm 1.8 & the 18-55 (comes with the camera).
  10. I have the same camera and am still getting familiar with it. I don't have all the answers, but have more questions for you.

    1) Is your dissatifcation with the skin tones and whites, related to your print out or on the monitor?

2)What type of prnter are you using?

3)Is your monitor's colours calibrated to printer's colours?

This can be a real difficult process which I haven't been able to solve with my Canon i850 printer.

Maybe it would be better to print direct from your camera straight to the printer so the colour settings in your PC don't over-ride the colour settings in your digital Rebel.
