  1. I find this whole comparison curious. How is this different than comparing a high performance 35mm film camera with the latest film to a 6x7cm camera and declaring the 35mm camera not worth upgrading to from your current 35mm camera. These are different tools for different purposes. The D700 was not created to produce large landscape images but rather to appeal to a broad range of photographers and with the Canon 5D and the 5D MK II.

Perhaps the new hasselblad digital camera or the recently announced leica would be worthy of comparison with 6x7 film.

Also to keep the comparison fair, if you are going to take the time to get a high resolution scan of a negative then why would you not take the time to use an appropriate tool to upsize the image from the digital camera before printing it?

In short, I would not want to be stuck with the limitations of a 6x7 camera while shooting a live event, nor would I want to be stuck with the limitations of a 12mp D700 or D3 if I were photographing landscapes to print mural sized prints with!

  2. Sorry this response is a year late but thought it might be helpful for anyone else reading this...

The Visatec uses the same bayonet mount as the Broncolor Impact so there are plenty of reflectors and accesories available but not as many (nor as pricey) as for the Broncolor branded units.

Right now it looks like Hasselblad has dropped them and they are going to be offered through a different distributer in the US. Overall these are really solid units with a real high quality of light at a nice discount compared to the Broncolor branded units.

  3. I'm not sure what you mean by "refresh." There are modified versions of the grey cube charger that will fit the 200c but Norman strongly recommends not using it as it will drastically shorten the life of the battery used by the 200c. I'd strongly suggest purchasing a Delta V or Supercharger instead.
  4. Hi guys,

I realize it's been a while since anyone posted to this thread but I imagine there are still some 200B owners who may be interested in this.

I have a 200B and am looking to make some modifications to the unit. The easiest one is to modify an old blue battery pack to use NiMH batteries instead of Nicad for roughly 50% greater capacity. Any thoughts on this? The big disadvantage that I'm aware of is that once the mode is made the battery can no longer be charged inside the pack as it needs a different charger to do it. I already orderd some connectors that match the standard battery pack so it will be easy to modify a charger to connect to the modified pack. I could also purchase a connector for the pack to charge the battery when installed BUT that connection, from Amphenol, is really expensive.

I know of a company that modifies the 200B to raise the maximum output to 400 watt/seconds. Nice but what's the point if the battery lasts half as long? Well, with the upgrade it seems more reasonable and it seem like the upgrade would require simply replacing the biggest capacitor with an even bigger one, OR adding an additional capacitor and another switch to add it in. Then a lumedyne 800watt second tube could be substituted and with the lumedyne reflector you would get more usable output than with the 400B and with less size and weight. Any thoughts or suggestions?
