  1. <p>Ive changed hosting services, so please follow the link below to view the new community! (Its much better than the previous one anyway)... the aimoo site is no longer active.

    <p><a href="http://www.freewebs.com/photoassistants/">http://www.freewebs.com/photoassistants/</a>

<p>The link from there will take you to the new site!

<p>Sean, thanks for the advice, and I take it onboard (excuse the pun).

<p> I suppose my thoughts about only assistants is so they have somewhere they can vent and discuss without fear of reprisal (obviously if its slander, the member will be warned and the post removed)... and also I dont want it a site where people just write up jobs wanted ads...

<p> BUT upon saying that, I do agree with you that pros have a good perspective to bring, so therefore I extend the invitation to you and others to come and contribute should you wish to... we'll be more than happy to help

<p> Now make sure you tell YOUR assistants about this site! :D

    <p> Cheers.

  2. Come to Melbourne, AUstralia and do my course! :) Im majoring Photojournalism/Editorial at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT)...

    Just a thought! :D

But RIT is meant to be realy good, and its the course that my lecturer went to for a year, and says its really good, and we are able to do exchange with them, so must be good.

  3. <p>Ive noticed a lack of space for assistants worldwide (not to

mention especially in Australia), so Ive made a forum for

assistants, to help each other out, ask questions and discuss our

    unique employment!

<p>Please feel free to come in and have a look around and join in.

<p>Please ONLY assistants/students and wannabes, as its a space to

help each other out, and pros have a different perspective on things.

    <p>Thanks</p>

  5. hmmmm... remembering to drink myself and make sure photographer drinks enough as wel.... see theres something I didnt think of. cool.

Thankyou for all the help and hints. Very helpful.

My photographer has never had an assistant before, so i'm helping her organising her business and stuff so thatll be great fun on top of all the other stuff (I am serious.. Im an organiser... fanatic so says my fiance! :P ).

    Thanks again

  6. Just got a gig as an assistant (yay!), with a fab photographer who

is going to take me along to weddings and such to help shoot and

    general assist.

So, my question is this: "As a wedding photographer, what would you

like your assistant to be like/do at the event? What do I wear (I'm

a girl... such so you know)? etc etc? Any tips would be great.

I know I will probably get a briefing from my boss, but I figured

you guys might bring up some useful advice. (and I'm engaged so

dont worry about me trying to pick up any of the guests or wedding

    party(I've seen it happen!))

    Thanks

  7. My previous boss wore black dress pants, a nice collared shirt and a jacket, but no tie. Wool jackets are a bit cooler than any other fabric, but they can get hot no matter what.

All black could work, and it blends into the less traditional weddings as well. Maybe wear a black collared shirt, cos that keeps the formal aspect.

  8. YES! Dont wear squeaky shoes! If youre going to talk to the officiant/priest at the location, take the oppurtunity to wear the shoes you plan to on the day to make sure they dont squeak! :)

About moving around, the photographer I used to work for walked around (after checking with the officiant/priest), cos then you get good crowd shots (eg expressions of bridesmaids/groomsmen and parents etc).

Once you get into it, you may find you go to the same location and same officiant/priest many times, so make sure you listen to them, be courteous and get a good relationship going because then they will be more likely to give you more leyway for your photography.

  9. I like the response regarding getting the shots of getting the veil on, and the father seeing the bride for the first time. Perhaps getting their a little earlier (that the time for pre-ceremony shoot of parents Bmaids etc), and take the detail shots (flowers, rings, shoes, makeup cases etc etc), and then the bride has an option of relenting and letting you take some photos of her getting zipped up etc. Plus, if there are flowergirls and they are getting ready at the same locations, they are usually dressed first, so you can get some photos of them as well.

If you are unobtrusive and calm, the bride may feel more willing to let you take photos... Just make sure you let her know you will be there doing the detail shots.

  10. <p>Just to let you all know, there is a community group online for

all photographers assistants around the world.</p>

    <p><a

    href="http://groups.msn.com/ThePhotographersAssistantsLounge/"> The

    Photographers Assistants Lounge. </a>

    <p>http://groups.msn.com/ThePhotographersAssistantsLounge/

<p>Just a place where we can all get together and discuss our jobs,

    and get hints and tips.

<p>Come and join and get involved!

  11. Just a thought to anyone else reading this post (its a long time since it was originally posted).

If you dont like putting in an exclusive photographer clause in your contract because it would thus mean that no-one else will be able to take photos (and who the hell can enforce that!), possibly write it in such a way that suggests an exclusive Professional photographer clause.... therefore, the videographer cannot, by contract, take still shots, they must do video! (i dunno if anyone else has thought of that, but I thought I'd write it just in case) Also, maybe suggest to the clients that they may want to tell the videographer this when they meet/contract them, therefore ensuring they are aware of any possible problems.

I dont know why videographers bother with stills anyway.... when they edit the film, surely they are able to take stills from the movie!?!?!

The worst thing, I've found as a photographer, is that when, as a non taking photo guest, I see a scene as described above, I cant do anything about it! Although I have helped the photographer out once or twice, by simply posing as a "annoying relative guest" and asking the videographer about taking movie of a scene outside, thus distracting them from taking runs of the stills.

BUT the worst is when I cant do anything about the guests crowding behind the photographer, using their flashes and whatnot, while s/he is trying to get nicely exposed and setup shots.

Oh fun! and I shoot a wedding next week! :)

  12. <p>My neighbour recently gave me his medium format camera, but the

only thing he couldnt find for it were the instructions, so I thought

you guys might be able to help me out, as to where I might find some

    (possibly on the net)...

<p>Its a medium format, Yashica 635 twin lens reflex....

<p>What is everyones general opinion on them as well?

    <p>thanks everyone</p>

  13. I am quiet happy to help out with no. 2 (emails etc), and I cant help nag authors and change word into html form, but thats about it for no. 5 if thats any help. This is to start off with.. maybe a bit later I will be able to help out with no. 3, but being a uni student, I dont know if I'd be taking on too much. :)

    Experience.. let me see...

    * heaps of email experience.. just make sure you let me know if you want me to do no. 2 and I'll make a new email for it...

    * Webmastering.. I have done a couple of pages, so I know HTML fairly well and if I cant figure something out I cheat and use Dreamweaver! :) I can read it though, and I can read web form format as well.

    * Photography wise - I have a good idea for composition and colour, and I am striving to make my photos live up to that at the moment!

    * I like helpin people.

Time - I think between 5-10 hours a week.. maybe more? depends on the time that uni allows between thousands of assignments! :)

    Let me know!
