  1. first off, thanks for the great replies! second, the page at zeiss

was very helpful, but some of it was, well, weak. in effect it said

that tha biogen got its name because it allows one to capture all

the life around oneself. ummmm, ok :) anyway, thanks for the

    help!

oh, and if you know of any nifty lens-name-origins (like the dog),

    please share! :)

    have a good one all!

  2. hi all

i searched forums and could not find anything, so i thought i'd

throw this out to you: what do the names mean (if anything)?

superchromat seems indicative of superior chromatic fidelity,

planar nits at a flatness-of-field, distagon perhaps something to

do with shooting landscapes? tessar a loose connection to

tesla? i'm just curious if they have any meaning or if they're little

    more than differentiators.

    cordially yours. . .

  3. first of all, i'd like to thank all those that responded, but i'm afraid

i wasn't clear in my question, so please let me try again:

with violins, ebay is seen as a dumping ground, not a place to

sell a serious instrument. if you have an instrument of value, you

take it to an auction house, sell it yourself, or sell it back to your

luthier/shop (for any instrument worth upwards of 1000 dollars

    or so)

with hasselblads (in particular, although other medium format

systems seem to be in a similar situation), it seems that ebay is

an 'accepted' (perhaps, to some extent, even the standard)

marketplace. with the kind of money involved (how much does

the average 'system' cost? 2, 3, perhaps 5 thousand dollars?), it

would seem to me that a parallel distaste for ebay would have

arisen in the camera community, yet it seems to go strong, and

i'm curious as to why such expensive cameras seem to rely soo

heavily upon such a system. (are there few/no other

marketplaces? selling to shops a serious disadvantage?)

    thanks again

  4. it seems that with many things, ebay is not a place to be laying

down a couple of thousand dollars for something, or if one sees

something being sold for a thousand dollars or so (for instance,

a violin), it is often written off as a by-product of 'auction fever'

amongst amatures. so, basically, i'm curious as to why it

seems that ebay is something of a marketplace for hasselblads

and high quality camera equipment in general. is it just the "last

forever"-ness of them? any ideas anyone? seems like most

people here have had good experiences, and i'm wondering if

those with bad expereinces are just being quiet, or if ebay

provides a win-win setting for sellers and buyers of blads.

    thanks

  5. "Can you hear a small click when you push the release button?

That means it's trying to work but is being held up

    mechanicallyspeakingwise"

bingo! i do hear a little click when i push the button, so now i'm

left wondering, is this gonna cost me an arm and a leg, or just

my first born? :) thanks for all the help everyone, especially Mr.

Rosenthal! (i hadn't even thought to mention the click!)

    have a good day!

  6. i removed the dark slide. again, i can take pictures by sliding the

lock lever from 'o' to 't', but i cannot get the camera to respond to

the release button, and i'm mostly wondering if this is simply a

result of a blown fuse or if it is indicative of a much bigger

problem. as is, i've already shot two rolls of 120, but i'd rather

have a steadier hold on the camera when firing.

    thanks again!

  7. "Like it or not, though, production numbers do correlate to price,

new or used, because of basic economics. "

actually, i just got a used 500 elm "special lunar edition" (or

words to that effect) for about the same (with a little luck, slightly

less than) the price of a 'regular' 500 elm, so i'm going to go out

on a limb here and say that with a few exceptions (i believe there

have been 3 or so hasselblad's that were gold plated or

something of the sort), it really is the camera standing on its own

without any "1 of 1200" kind of forcing term that drives the price of

    the 'blad market.

    best

  8. hello all

i'm new here in a comprehensive kind of way (just got my first mf

camera and, thanks to the sage wisdom of my older brother ;) i

went straight to hasselblad (or was that the poor house. . .)) so,

i've got a used 500 elm that i can shoot by switching the lever on

the battery case from 'o' to 't' (the latter, if i understand wildi's

book properly, is for timed exposures), but the shuttter will not

release when i push the release button. is this something with

the fuse? is it a much bigger problem i should know about?

again, as is, i can take pictures, but i'd rather be able to push a

button than switch a lever! :)

thanks for any and all help (oh, and i must say, this thing is

worse than cigarettes! i'm addicted, and it's only been a week!)

    charlie
