1.
Instead of paying zillions for a 9, one option is to get a Nex 7 and put Zeiss glass on it or one or two Leica lenses, especially if you can find a clean used one. You have to use manual in this siuation, but if you were thinking of a 9 you knew it is manual all the way. The Nex 7 camera has a remarkable focusing system even in manual more that tells you when you are in focus: little red or yellow dots , if you prefer, that surround the scene you want to focus on.
So you may not have a 9, but with such wonderful Zeiss or Leica glass you have gone a long way. The sharpness and depth are very fine, maybe not the film like romanticized glow a Leica body produces, but wonderful none the less. I own a 9 but am not ashamed of what the Nex produces at all as my back up, despite the fact that it is not a full frame camera.
ps the Fuji x1 has, I've read, some issues. Also heft may not count for too much, but the Fuji is very light too like the Nex 7. The Nex has a menu from Hell.....but good.

  2.
I should know better than to ask this at my age and experience, but the "evil" spirit guides me.
What lenses have you used most successfully on the California coast from San Fran to the Oregon boarder on
traveeling Route 1 and west, where that is possible?

  3.
Martin, I have a Leica m9 so that manual focus is not an issue, but I have to say that manual focusing with the 7 is much easier than with the Leica to the point where if and when I return to my Canon cameras I may stay with manual. 3rd party lenses from Zeiss and Leica or Canon may negate the "compact" factor, but I have put my 70-200 f4 Canon on the nex with a tripod to great affect and it's half the weght, at least, of using a 5DII and no fringing.

  4.
There is no reason to call Sony out unless they don't deliver. But even so,
there are adapters for lenses for Zeiss, Leica , Canon, Nikon, Voigtlander...lenses.
If you look through their web sites or B and H s you will find every conceivable mm range.
The Nex 7 is wonderful. With adapters focusing is manual but fast and very easy with the lighting up of the scene when in focus.

  5.
Will the photo.net bosses please add the Nex 7 to the list of cameras in the database? A few of us were lucky enough to have gotten one a while ago. But now that they are being shipped, many more will have them soon if they don't lready.

  6.
I suspect that the 5N has sold out because people cannot wait for the nex 7 and the fact that the 5n has such wonderful reviews. The 7 is so crammed with menu options that it tends to drive me crazy, though the outcomes are great. Yet, if I could afford it I would also get a 5n.
Using adapters, which are not cheap, one can us Canon, Zeiss, Leica....lenses, bringing the quality of the end result to a very high level. The kit lenses don't come close in quality. I also prefer to shoot manually. The litle red dots that show you that you have focus is one of the greatest things to have hit the camera industry. The nex cameras, especially the 7 seem to me to be computers with lenses attached.

  7.
The adapteer I have for M lenses is by Novoflex, solid and not cheap; it is tight, no jiggle, and wide open no F stops--see below.
For Canon I have for the time being the Japanese Kipon adapter with blades, F stops marked as numbers 1-6. It jiggles--not that cannot be managed. BUT it cannot take the heavier lenses, 24-70, 70-200 F4. They just twist off. There is no stability; the lens would fall off onto the floor if you didn't hold it. ALSO, those bigger Canon lenses should probably be on a tripod, unless you are younger than I and have large strong hands. It may look strange but you won't care when you see the pictures.

  8.
Bill, I did use that too, but it is a heavy and unbalanced business. I just sold the 2.8 70-200, keeping the 70-200 f4 which can be used hand held on the 7. I did buy the 135mm canon which is an astonishingly sharp lens. I can use it of course my my old 5n. But the issue is that the adapter for canon to nex cannot seem to take heavy lenses. They either unscrew too easily, or not take hold at all. I am waiting for Novoflex to produce a solid adapter. If an adaptere can take one Canon lens it should take them all. The Novoflex I am told may be able to allow auto focus.
The 7 is more computer like than the 5n and takes some learning using it in manual mode with different adapters especially.
Happy New Year

  9.
Quico,
I agree with you about putting a big lens on the5n or the 7, except that I tried it on my 5n. I put my Canon70-200 is 2.8 on it. I was very careful, not using a tripod, for just a few shots. They were amazing. I would only use that lens using its own trpod collar with that little body sticking out behind it not just to shock passers-by, but to take what would be a techincally great shot in terms of reach, detail, and color, irrespective of my modest talents. would not use the 24-70 lens though, but even the 100 macro is quite usable.

  10.
I've used my Leica lenses, Zeiss M lenses, and just the other day, having received the Canon adapter, used several of my Canon lenses on the 5N. (Having a good trade in arranged for the 7, I can hardly await its arrival.) All these lenses work beautifully, even a wonderful old Voigtlander 16mm that I cannot use on my M9. Focusing is fine with the little white or yellow dots that show up when you have achieved focus. This makes things easier than using a Leica body. Reichman made the, for Leica M9 users, almost outrageous claim that the 7 outresolved it and that only one DSLR outresolves the 7. That will surely change when a new Canon 5DII arrives. Being very careful I put on my very large and heavy 70-200mmCanon 2.8. The sharpness through the screen was remarkable. I wouln't use anything too heavy on a Nex camera without a tripod, though the 100mm macro is just fine on it. I tried a used Leica 135mm at a local shop but found it impossible to use because of the focusing rings on the lens that even with not large hands I couln't keep my fingers off and therefore moved just a bit. That was enough to throw off the focus.
Arthur, I think it was downsized. Reichman says as much with the reason why.
Now since almost all Canon and Nikon lenses can be used via an adapter why would anyone interested in photography not want a 7 especially at the very low price compared to Leicas and several others. And as Sony improves it, probably, who knows, even adding a full frame sensor, the world of photgraphy will change forever. All I have to do is improve my technique with the camera, photoshop and Lightroom.

  11.
Having just bought a Sony Nex 5n as a backup to my M9 and light quality carry around in place of my Canon 5DII(I'm aging) I have put my Leica and Zeiss lenses on it to great affect. The camera has an LCD back and an EVF--when they become available again. So "eyes" for the 135 are not necessary. My 90mm Lens works quite well, so I'd be expecting to see what I'm shooting with a 135 which would be a 202.5 mmon the Nex 5. In short, taking the M9 and Nex on a photo trip with 3 to 5 light lenses might replace the Canon with its quite heavy lenses. Any thoughts here, encouragement or discouragement?

  12.
Charles, I envy your Varanasi picture. I took about the same one on film years ago and so was caught without the flexibility of ISO or the techniques I've since developed, if not honed. I was also more distant from the fellows performing the ceremony. Must get back there. It was very moving, even though I'm not of the "hari krishna" generation.
Tomorrow off to China for a long trip with a small Leica m with 21,35, and 50 lenses, Zeiss and Leica mix, and the Canon 70-200 f4 is on a t2i body. The joys of retirement. I know, I'm missing 50-110. Don't hesitate to critisize that.

  13.
When I was in Vietnam I used the 24-105 as a portrait lens on the Mekong and the northern mountains, and on another trip in Kunming and the Li river. That was on my 5DII without the extra reach of the Rebel T2i which I bought for the upcoming trip. If the Leica M9 cannot do portraits even with me at the helm I'll hang up my camera bag. Though I'll be in Shanghai and Beijing for five or so days each at the start and finish of the month long trip, I'll be in airport after airport on the trek west. If airports (maybe Amsterdam does) and airplanes only had laundromats for foreign visitors!!!!

  14.
I used to own that wonderful F4 lens, but after reading up on the F 2.8 II 70-200 I bought that, trading in the F 4. The 2.8 is the sharpest lens I have ever owned, but not yet used. I expect to use it closer to home , ie the U.S. when travelling in my car, now that I've retired. But you are right. Possibly one of my dealers will let me borrow a used F4, if they have one on their shelves.

  15.
Aging daily, I am not about to take a Canon 5DII with a rack of lenses and heavy tripod across China to

the mountains. I'll have a Leica M9 with Zeiss 24 and 50mm and Leica 35mm lenses. Easy enough at my

age. But I do think I need a long lens, but not a 70-200 2.8 mark II Canon lens that weighs over three

pounds and put that on rebel t2i. But how about the 24-105 Canon with maybe a 1/4 extender? Does that

sound sensible enough? I solicit your help and experience in making wise choices for this long trip.

  16.
A question that always pops into my mind as I check in: Will my Peli case be opened and cameras or lenses ripped off at Newark or in Europe or Asia? Has anyone had a Peli case opened and stolen from other than Mike Walker in South Africa?

  17.
I've checked my Peli case on several trps and never had any problems. I didn't use it last time I went to China. Is there any reason I couldn't or shouldn't check it this time? There will several internal flights, by the way.
