I'd like to see a little more light in the area of his driving hand, and legs, but it's a cool piece of work never the less.

Away from the background about 4 feet. Maybe do a 3/4 shot to eliminate the red ground cover. The further you move her from the background, the softer that hard shadow behind her will get. How many lights are you using? It's not terrible for a first effort.
