    Heads Up

Beautiful job Pete. The evolution of the image is stunning. What technique did you use for the aspect ratio change from the December to June image?

Beautiful girl and capture, but I agree with the others about all of the different color tones. I'm glad you had her take her rings off, but I would have liked to see you do something about the tan lines on her fingers left behind.

I love the idea here, but the frame is a bit too tight and the dodging and burning effects are not subtle at all. Great potential here, but as displayed, I feel like it falls a bit short.

    Maggie,

I really like the original better (not only do I like it better, I just really like it) than the cropped option. The small strip at the top acts like an anchor, giving my eye some stability, whereas the cropped version is much more frenetic and anxious.

  1. This is one of my favorite couple of images in your portfolio. I do agree, however, that this would lend itself to a straight B&W treatment much better than sepia. When you go back to shoot it, I would try to get a bit more elevation from my camera while keeping the foreground intact but getting more of the bottom of the house. Very nice image with lots of great potential here.
  2. Three comments:

First, I enjoy the cropped image better as I feel that this sky, as shown, offers little to the image.

Second, I am amused by the above comment that states "as we all know, black and white images hide imperfections".

Really? I always was under the impression that weak color photographers used color to distract from imperfections.

Third, I agree with Vince about this looking a bit tipped to the right. I could be wrong, but that was the first impression I got when looking at this.

  3. "It is hard for me to believe that this was photo was made by the same person."

Backing up through some of my previous comments, I came across this image again and read the lengthy conversation that transpired. I apologize that I offended you with the comment made above as that was not my intent. I was simply establishing that I thought the bulk of your work was phenomenal and this one...not so much. I am not a professional critic and have no training as such. I am a photographer. I have my own opinions. I don't feel that my own work is so remarkable. Most of my critiques are more to the negative side due to the fact that photo.net is rife with backslappers that will shower "outstandings" down on any remotely above average image. I don't want that on my images, and I suspect that most serious photographers don't want it on their images either.

Again, sorry I offended you, it wasn't my intention and I sincerely apologize.

  4. The horizon definitely needs to be leveled out. Maybe you can't do it now due to the angle of the head or the position of the hand, but that should have been taken into consideration while exposing the frame. As it looks now, it appears as if the ocean is pouring into her eye, which leads me to my next point. I do really like the way that the horizon line and the beach line both emanate from her eye. I wouldn't like it so much if her eye were exposed, but now it leads you to where her eye should be, making up for the fact that you can't see her eye. Overall, this is ok, but it definitely has a lot of potential to be much better in my opinion.
  5. Personally, I feel that all of this is a lot of bluster about people wanting to be "right" and it all has very little impact on the future of the world.

Is there life on Mars? Who cares. It will have absolutely zero impact on our lives if they find a fossilized microbe in a rock on Mars. Anyone that still harbors a belief that colonizing the planets is ever going to happen is delusional. Space travel is a colossal waste of money and effort. But it did give us Tang.

Is there a god? Again, who cares? Need somebody to blame when things don't go your way? Yep, it was gods will. Your kid runs out in the street and gets hit by a truck...god must have a plan. If there ever was a god, it certainly seems pretty obvious to me that he has lost interest in us.

Evolution? Sure, it sounds logical, but what does it get us at the end of the day? The changes are so slow that nobody ever lives long enough to notice them so who cares.

Bottom line is this...we are only on this planet for a blink of an eye. How about taking responsibilities for our own actions, stop arguing about things that have no bearing on current society.

  6. I'm afraid that this image doesn't do either the scene or the camera justice. Maybe this is a stunning image at 24x 30, but at this size, there is very little to catch or hold my attention. I did spend a moment looking at the reflections of the purple mountains majesty in the lake, but just a moment. As many times as I have seen them before, I would rather see them again than this. The foreground material is not detailed and is uninteresting, as is the background. Sorry. Your black and white landscape work is phenomenal. It is hard for me to believe that this was photo was made by the same person.

My biggest issue is the total depth of field caused by the two sandwiched images. I feel like SOMETHING should be out of focus at least a little bit. I like the concept and think it has potential, but the man does seem a bit too prominent in my eyes. I am very much with G. that I wish he would get out of my way so I can see what he is looking at.

This has potential to be interesting. Desaturate the colors back to where they were before you put them on steroids and change the angle of the film plane to mimic the angle o the candy bin. Try to get equal parts of each bin into the frame following the basic rule of thirds and Voila!
  7. This is at least an interesting concept. I have to agree with "G" that the background is much to busy for this image. It looks like some bad drapes from the 60's. However, the lighting and the exposure on the subject flowers is as good as can be expected.

Wow, that's a lot of color. I'm sorry that this type of manipulation isn't exactly my cup of tea. I am hard pressed to see its relationship to the art of photography. I would have hoped that the original image had the type of composition and contrast that would have allowed it to stand on its own rather than trying to rescue a boring snapshot with some PS gimmickry.

LOL! I can't muster the strength to actaully make an intelligent comment on this so suffice it to say that I am LMAO!

PS. Thanks for the technical details about adding the water in Photoshop. There are many around here that would have mistaken it as having actually been submerged somewhere. No joke!
