A friend recently purchased a Nikon D5000. They took the SD card out of a Coolpix, and without doing anything to it, took a bunch of shots. While shooting, they could review the images on the screen, but once done, and the card was removed from the camera for upload, all that showed up were the .DSC files. No .JPG's. When they put the card back into the camera, the images were not viewable there either. They have used other cards without incident, but they were only used on the D5000, never in another camera.
Is the issue that the card should have been reformatted before using it in the new camera?

Macro Lens

Thanks for the input guys. It is appreciated. -
Macro Lens
in Nikon
I'm purchasing a macro lens for my D200 and am debating between the 60mm and the
105mm. It seems that without price being an issue, that the 105mm would be the
obvious choice. Am I wrong here?
I'm just getting into macro a bit, so do the same distortion principles apply as
to normal focal length lenses? It seems that the 105mm would be more versatile
to possibly use for portraits as well as the macro work.

For the amount and sizes of prints you are talking about, I think the R800 is a good option. You can always spend more to get better if you feel like that isn't enough.

I've had terrific luck with Adorama.

Excuse my complete ignorance here, but as a lifelong film user
thinking of switching to digital, I need a bit of help. I have tried
out a few inexpensive digital cameras and the shutter lag is
excruciating, causing me to miss pic after pic. I have downloded the
specifications for the D100 from the Nikon web site and I cannot find
any reference to the shutter lag. Is this a non issue with this
camera? Is it now nonexistent? (I am considering this camera because I
already shoot Nikon and will be able to use my existing lenses).

I agree with you.

I, for one, would rather not go back to the days when each POW was selected by a single elf on a rotating basis. Every Monday, people sharpened up their broad swords and made sure their powder was dry in preperation for the war that inevitably occured.
With the exception of one or two photogs that couldn't take the heat, and one chapel image that duped at least a good portion of the elves, the POW discussion has been much more civilized, although sometimes antiseptic.
I'll take the civilized. I think it is better for the community.

I don't think that we are actually that far apart. You've talked about categorization, and I think that's all anybody wants. I am self employed, so I have no problem browsing any time I want to. Telling me to "do some work instead" is sarcastic, pompous, and not really on point. My oldest child is 15, I also have no problem with him browsing p.net as we have had many discussions about the images that are found on this site. Personally, he would rather filter out flowers and sunsets as would many of us.
Photo.net administration has made the point many times that this site is for the masses, not for photographers. If this site was for photographers, this would never be an issue. If you want me to draw the line, I will. I'm not afraid to. Sure, some people will disagree, but that is ok. Obviously, it would be impossible to please everybody.
By this point, everybody knows how progressive you and your daughter are. Thats great. But there are many, many more users of this site that are not so progressive as you and I. You have made the decision on how to raise your children. Everyone else should also be allowed to make that same decision for their children as well as themselves.
There will always be a contradictory argument to be made. Some people just like playing Devils Advocate, and some are really good at it, throwing out absurdities to try to make a point. There are absurd points to be made on either side of any argument. Nobodies eyes are going to fall out over seeing a nude photograph for a second, and on the other side, no censorship is taking place by categorizing the "adult" images. Surely, your images would get may more views as the "Adult" category would get many more searches than any other. Why do you think that people put the word "nude" into their titles when there isn't a person in the frame?
I guess I just can't see a down side to categorizing nude images.
If you can keep it short, like fifty words, I would be interested in reading what you think the downside is.

I have to concur that all this talk about banning is just a smokescreen being sent up by the "lets see everything crowd" to try to alarm the rest of the public as to censorship. Nobody wants to ban anything. People just want to let their kids browse or browse themselves while at work without being struck in the face with an 8x10 of a cucumber in a compromising position.
If you want to see the cucumber you can. You would be able to see all images that you wanted to see, but people that didn't want to see them wouldn't be forced to.
As far as being banned from the site for not complying with the rules, of course you could be, and you should be banned if you don't follow the rules. People are banned for posting others work, a clear violation of the rules. If it was the sites rule to designate your images as having "adult content" and you refused for whatever misguided reason, you too, should be banned.
This is a site for the masses. The site administrators should make the right decision, even if it upsets a few vocal chords. Make the right decision and take the heat. Too many excuses have been offerred up.

Bravo Brian. Well said.

The "1's" shown in Roberts example are not a good example at all as they were not posted as 1's to begin with. Those were posted prior to the change in scale from 1-10 to 1-7. With that change, all the ratings were lowered to fit within the new scale. Chances are that they were originally 3's if I remember the conversion properly.
As far as the original question goes, the response received by Arash by the original photographer was definitely a revenge rating. Insinuating that it is Arash's own fault is ridiculous. Thats why revenge is not justification for anything else. The rating system has been prostituted by abusers. Anyone that comes to the site and wishes to use it the way it was intended should be allowed to do so without the cries of "the ratings are useless, the ratings are useless". The ratings are useless because of the abusers and revenge raters.
-
I am curious about your requests to have people stop rating your photos, yet you both continue to rate others as recently as today. I am curious as to your reasons for these strange actions.

Good Bye.

I would suggest making the site a pay site immediately. It doesn't have to be a lot, $2.95 a month automatically recuring charge. Give them 24 hours for free to check it out and see if they are interested or not. Current Patrons would be good until their current subscription ran out.
-
It's not a freak occurence Philip. This topic has been addressed many times in the past. As previously stated, many things contribute to "ratings inflation". If you browse through the previos thread, you will find several that deal with the topic. thanks for noticing.

Seven has me intrigued! What is to come? Tell me, tell me!
As far as the "item" link goes, it either bounces back and forth or it depends on whos page you are on because I have seen it both ways over the last week.
-
It would be more like in the ten or twenty per day if you limited all of the registered newbies to 1 or 2 uploads per week into this category. The critiquers could be easily accquired if the right people were asked to contribute.
I'm talking about kids and real beginners, like the first ten rolls through the camera. Kids need to be spoken to differently than adults. After the first few (10) critiques, adults would be bounced into the regular pool of critique images.
-
Often when rating and/or critiqing photos of new members, I wonder
about the experience and/or age of the submitter.
It would be great if there could be some sort of beginners or
childrens section where they could submit maybe 1 or 2 photos a week
and get guaranteed helpful feedback from some volunteer dedicated
critiquers. If people new they were looking at a photo of the family
cat made by a 14 year old, they would react to it differently than if
it was made by a more experience person. The same goes for all of the
other "beginner" subjects like flowers, sunsets, and squirrels.
Only .DSC files are showing up on the memory card
