did anyone record it? can i borrow/buy your video??
-
just a thought!
would make a very good marraige and absolutely secure film (even
though i think film is secure for my lifetime which is about another
40ish years?)....
-
if ilford stays in business they will not be selling their film division... it must be one of their strengths so why sell? ok so film sales must have suffered over the last few years but i have a feeling that film sales whilst dropping will steady then increase again... for the last year i shot all my weddings (x25) on digi. i have now returned to film (colour and b/w c41 kodak).. it was interesting speaking to my lab... they say they have noticed an increasing number of pros switching from shooting digi back to film this year. why? because of the time it takes for post production and sitting in front of a monitor tweaking colour balance/exposure etc... with the increase in digi the perceived value of traditional b/w imagery has increased and in turn it is becoming a 'greater' art form.. i also believe that canon and maybe nikon will follow leicas lead and produce a pro film body with an optional digi back... the reason for this will be pressure from kodak/fuji because their film sales have dipped.. people shooting digi rarely print there images (reported in the photo press here in the uk).. the corporations whilst tempting us with new digi gizmos and the opportunity for them to obsolete this equipment every 18 months shot the film producers in the foot!!
-
absolutely!
in years to come when historians research and review digi images will they be believed?
when they look at negatives will they be more believable?
for those that think film is dead your wrong!
-
if i shot an image with a digi camera would you believe it was true to the original scene??
i shoot another image on film.... is this image true to the original scene?
the answer to both questions is maybe... all images (with the exception of 'wet handprints' could be manipulated... digi imaging is not 'photography' as far as i am concerned.. the image is nothing more than the scene turned into numbers. these numbers can be altered at will. once the scene is captured on film thats it... ok you can alter the contrasr.. colour nalance etc but you cannot clone out your mistakes!!!
the film image is more beleivable and in turn its credibility must be greater..
digi is fine for pr, news, snaps etc.. however... i've just invested more in film cameras and after a year of shooting digi weddings (x30) i'm going back to doing them on film. a few other photographer friends are doing the same!
-
whatever works for you and your happy with i say!
it really is irritating when i read in digi mags that the end of film is here...
photographers have been sucked into the digi world by nikon, canon, olympus etc... film cameras (in theory) reached there peak in the late 90's... when you bought an f5 etc it really will last 30 years or so... the manufacterers came up with digi capture to obsolete what they had already produced to make us buy more of their products! it certainly wasnt to make our lives easier! just look at the increased profits these companys are making now compared to the film 'era'. however... digis are a godsend to the manufacterer... they can obsolete them every 6-10 months.. tweak the software, add a little extra functions ... what you buy tommorow will be bettered... you will want that camera because they now you lust after the latest gizmos!! it most certainly will not make you a better photographer! shooting digi takes away the imaging process that we must all use when we are out shooting. i love adjusting nothing more than the shutter speed and aperture.. 2 things. with digi the list is a lot longer..
as far as i'm concerned digi is nothing more than a 5th emulsion (colour neg, b/w neg, b/w pos, slide) that i have the choice to use. you may well think its a labour saving method of shooting and also cost effective... if you do i dont agree.
i shoot a lot of weddings in the summer and this is my first full 'season' of shooting them purely digi. last year i shot 50%. i decided to shoot them fully digi this year to save money (?60 per wedding x30 weddings...) i'm sitting here with a lap full of prints that i shot (with leica ms) and a screen full of images shot with a canon 1dmk2...
as far as i'm concerned the prints are streets ahead of any digi print produced with the canon.. you cannot get away from the fact that digi images exhibit a different look and feel.
my main issue with shooting weddings with a digi is that it takes the best part of a day to edit through 800 shots... adjust exposure and colour balance if necessary then burn onto dvd.. with film it was just a case of dropping into the lab and picking up the prints the next day.. 2 hours of editing finished the job. for pr and news nothing beats digi. i shoot 40 odd pics... edit for 15 minutes and wire... no more rushing to the lab, scanning negs etc.
digi has its place for me with my work but i have now reinvested in film and i'm happy. every pro photographer now needs a digi for some element of his/her work. if mr beckerman has gone completely digi then i guess he's thought about it long and hard.
i do suspect however that this is a marketing ploy! if a top class camera maker gives you a digi and says go shoot some pics and we will pay you money you will! they get pr and marketing and you get cash
as a documentary photographer i also have a big problem even thinking about shooting digi... pixels can be moved and messed about with which in turn devalues any image which you want to have a historical value in years to come... law enforcement agencys still only shoot film because digi film cannot be trusted...
i also believe that the perceived value of film images is increasing... its going to become even more accepted as 'art' and certainly isnt going to die anytime soon!

it will not be long before he drifts back to film... i know a lot of snappers who have missed film and re invested...

interesting comments from the leica forum...
thanks for something a little more positive from kelvin (you have an email waiting).
the group of photographers located in/close to anywhere called brighton will be a cooperative... meaning we share costs and also share any profits!
it just so happens that making it restrictive to a specific brand (see also the family of man project) and only b/w means that apart from the aesthetics of the image all images should have a similar look when edited together etc... at the back of my mind restricting to leica only (glass) there is a marketing reason.. its possible that leica will be interested in the marketing of the project and 'we' may even get help with exhibition space etc.. who knows...
i didnt want the issue of using only leica to become a problem... hence the posting on this leica forum but it appears there are people here who have nothing better to do. i want to do the project and just wanted to make contact... if you have comments which are negative why waste your time on here?
for those photographers who are interested in the project its all about the collaboration and creation of images from a specific place with the same name 1000's of miles apart.. by photographers who believe in the project and want to make it work... if you dont use leica i'm sorry... why not start your own brighton beach project..?
regards profits etc from the project... the plan is to cover our own costs (film, d&p and printing etc..) and share exhibition costs etc. as a whole.. we will get an income back from the possibility of magazine repros and print sales and maybe even an online gallery with a sales option.
we need to have oz, nz and ny covered as a minimum meaning 4 photographers which is a quarter split of costs..
-
i dont want to appear snobby or as a gear freak!!! (both of which i am most certainly not)..
quite simply this project for anyone interested is about creating a set of images about brighton (oz, nz, usa etc.) using b/w film and using leicas... for exhibitions and possibly a book...
if i said it was open to anyone i would be flooded with offers... i've kept it very specific for these reasons...
-
why...
because i'm looking for a specific feel & look to the whole project...
i'm no geek and use leica because thats the way i shoot best... i'm not looking for digi snaps or any long lens images...
thats why i put this request on the leica forum!

i've been photographing brighton beach (england) for the last 3
years. shooting only black and white and with leicas. i want to make
contact with other photographers (pro or amateur) with a view to
create a short term cooperative of photographers to work on the
following projects;
1. 24 hrs in brighton.. (we all shoot for 24hrs!)
2. an exhibition of images under the title 'this is brighton'. this
will include images from the 24 hr project and those that we have
already shot by the time an exhibition is ready to show. ideally this
will become a travelling show...
3. a book... i've published 1 book and co written another so i have a
little experiance.
all 3 projects will require time and money... the 24hr project could
happen within the next month.. the exhibition will take at least a
year. it would be ideal to publish the book to coincide with the
exhibitions etc... its possible that a book publisher could be found
but i would rather self publish..
i have in mind certain criteria for the project...
1. the project is about a place called 'brighton' wherever in the
world that may be.. (england, usa, oz, nz etc..) as i believe
brighton (england) is the first ever brighton and its by the sea the
project should be about anywhere thats called brighton and is by the
sea!
2. all images must be shot with leica glass.. (voightlander and hexar
bodys can be used).
3. all images will be reproduced as b&w... i would prefer that all
images were shot on b&w film...
4. no digital! if your interested
