I upgraded from Tiger with Vuescan installed to Leopard 10.6 and my 5000F is working fine. Not using the Canon software means you loose the use of the buttons and I assume you loose the Canon Fare feature.

1. This camera is from the mid 1980's. I bought one because Consumer Reports picked it as a best buy one year.
2. The panorama was accomplished via an insert. If you did not get the insert then you can not do panoramas.

What Eric said.
I had trouble the first time until I realized that that it has to be forced on.

Just received my D70s remote cable tonite. I could not figure it out. Found a post on the web explaining that you really have to force the cable into the camera. It is a tight connection. Worked fine once I used more force.

You can usually find the X-700 capacitors pre-packaged with installation instructions on Ebay. Sometimes the seller offers an explanation of this common problem so you can better understand what has happened. Caps fail over time and an X700 can be 20 years old. Everyone says you can do it yourself but it looks like you are working in tight quarters.
If you can get close to the $50 price that Doug got thats the way to go. If the caps are that old it's probably time for new seals.

You do not focus this camera by looking thru a viewer and adjusting the focus visually. Focus is set by setting the distance to the object. There is a un-coupled range finer. The range finder if working would be used to compute the distance to the subject and then you would dial in that distance setting. You can live without the rangefinder. You will have to figure out the distance yourself and dial it in.
After so many years the material that folds out probably has cracks and tears that will result in light leaking on to the film during exposure. Open the back of the camera and extend the lens. Take the camera together with a small flashlight into a dark room. Shine the light into the back of the camera and you will probably see light shining out of some of the fold corners. These cracks will need to be sealed. You should be able to google the mixture for a paste to seal them.
You can probably un jam the shutter by fiddling with the arm or lever that on the outside of the camera. It could be locked from trying to use the timer.
