I too have used this lens for several months now on my N80. I am very happy with its performance. Since is in the Sigma Professional EX series, its glass is MUCH sharper than you would get from consumer grade lenses. Yes, it's heavy, but this only shows that it's construction is sturdy enough for field use. I don't believe the design of the tripod mount was meant for rotating the camera for verticle use, but only to secure the lens to the mount. I think that is the reason it moves so stifly.
