1. > but he could have taken any of them on a Canon, a Nikon, a Contax G2, or a point and shoot digital.

    Thanks Captain Obvious. ;o)

I was refering to the Leica quality of it. Any competent photographer could have taken these images with their camera of choice. What I'm saying is that they wouldn't look exactly the same.

Feel free to disagree, but I do believe in the "Leica look". When I browse Photosig.com, some pictures will attract my attention and I'll often recognize the glow of a 50mm Summicron. And please remember that comes from someone who never ever touched a Leica.

Let's try it. Someone on this board must have both EOS and Leica bodies with two similar lenses like the Canon 35mm f/2 and the Leica 35mm Summicron. Use a tripod, take the same picture twice, 1 with each camera and lenses at f/2, and I'll guess which one is the Leica. Too easy? Shuffle 20 random copies of these 2 images and I'll tell you which ones are Leica, and which ones are not.

If I can't do it, I'll be really grateful to learn that Leica is just like any ordinary camera out there, since that'll save me lot of money in the future.

  2. Ray,

Twice as much? Please tell me where you buy your Leica stuff.

Because, if I can find something similar to my Nikon gear for only twice as much, I can actually afford it. I need an AE body, a super wide, a 35mm, a 50mm and a short tele.

  3. Mike, check out the previous thread and the pictures by Sandy and Alex Shishin. That's the Leica look that no other camera can realy replicate, and I believe this is the only reason a relatively poor person like me would save for months (yeah right, years!) to buy Leica instead of the excellent Nikanon stuff.

Not that I have any Leica equipment. I really can't afford it. For now I stick with my bag full of Nikon primes. But someday, I'll have a M7, a Noctilux and a secretary who'll scan my pictures and post them on photo.net.

    Oh, and a BMW too.

    ;o)

  4. Is this humor? It's definitely funny. The guy with the Noctilux asks his secretary to scan his pictures. Makes sense actually.

Just resiz... just ask your secretary to resize the pictures. No need to rescan. Might want to tell her about unsharp masks. And maybe buy her a Photoshop book.

Sorry if this sounds rude. It's really jealousy. I hope someday I'll be able to ask my secretary things like that. Man...

  5. Chad,

You didn't notice something missing on your statue of liberty?

Seriously, this is a 1:1 replica, just above the tunnel (we see the entry far left where the scooter is) where Lady Di died. Hence the flowers, which are put there daily by Diana's admirers.

  6. Hey Alexandru,

I don't own any Leica gear, and yet I read this forum every day. The fact is, Leica shooters are a different bunch, shoot differently and different subjects, and behave differently than most other Nikon/Canon/Pentax photographers. That's why I hang out here.

I might never be able to afford a M, but to compensate, these days I shoot with my N80 using only small primes, barely looking through the viewfinder trying to convince myself that my 35mm f/2 AF is just as good as a Summicron and my N80 as silent as a M7.

    That's what it's all about...

    I think.

  7. Another vote for the primes, especially if you are used to changing lenses. These days I carry 3 (24mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2 and 85mm f/1.8) in a small Billingham bag and it works great.

If you prefer a single zoom, I'd give the new Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 a serious look.

Have fun with the N80, I love mine.

I also like to kid around now and then, so if you believe everything you read then that's your problem. Sorry. I have a huge sense of humor. I fool around, make stuff up and create hoaxes, too, when I feel like it. If you believe everything you read on the internet and see on TV have I got a bridge for you!
I have to return it to Nikon eventually, and of course when it breaks it won't be repaired. I even had a veterinarian friend in Africa who specializes in elephant care send me some phallus hide from the Loxodonta Africana (known for its flexibility and grip when wet) which I then had a local taxidermist apply to my camera in place of the original rubber.
