1.
i was looking for recommendations for a large external hard drive to be used with a laptop that is not a mac. my new seagate crapped out on me twice this year causing the typical data storage problems and will cost me countless hours. weve all heard this before right! whats out there these days that is reliable? i process upwards of 10,000 images per week and want something i can trust. any info appreciated! thanks. larry
2.
yup, did that already. those are mostly frame shops so im not so sure what im seeing is truly standard sizes. my customers are most likely walking into a walmart to pick up their frames for these photos hence why i was looking for a standard size. i guess i need to walk into a walmart and see for myself. thought i could save a trip. pnet as useful as ever. cheers.

  3.
i screwed up the dimensions of a team photo and now the 8x10s purchased just dont look nice. i want to give each customer a panoramic style print in addition to their purchase. but i dont know what the standard frame sizes are for panoramic. can anyone help? i was thining of printing 4x12's, but i dont want this team to have to look all over to find a frame for it. any help? thanks! larry

  4. one thing i continue to learn about mountain photography is to get up 1-2 hours before sunrise even if the weather conditions dont appear to be what i want. most of my favorite images have come on overcast (or conditions that i thought wouldnt produce good images) and therefore slept in. the more i dont bother worrying about the weather (not talking about risking life and limb in dangerous weather conditions though), the more i am amazed at what happens in the mountains when its raining or overcast. at least thats how it has been for me in the mountains here in the northeast.
  5. i agree its off topic. but issues were brought up, for example, eating farm raised salmon and the detriment of such to the environment. well, if thats what is being brought up in this thread, i felt giving the readers of this thread a weblink with information about non farm raised salmon (and maybe the ability to purchase such) not all that inappropriate, especially because this thread has gotten off topic for some time now. i find the timing of this decision somewhat peculiar.

but i understand we have gotten well off topic and should cease discussions.

  6. i usually refrain from using lol on photography websites, BUT lol @ "It's the feeling I get when I see a "Support Greenpeace" bumper sticker on a Hummer driven at 90 mph, with no passengers."

i totally respect marks viewpoints on the bigger picture. based on my prior commments, its clear i dont feel there is much i can do about the overall trashing our society does to our environment. my view is that my fellow man is trashing wildlife and environment all over the place, so who am i, as a nature photographer to do that to a single animal for the name of a photo. after all weve put them through, my photo just isnt worth it.

but i do appreciate your point of view and do agree with many of your points. mark, do you have any links or websites you can plug in this thread to give people some environmental freindly (and probably much more expensive) options to some of the points you are making? i know i would like to research alternatives in my current lifestyle.

    cheers. good shooting to you.

  7. mark. i fully understand the big picture of your point. but there is little one man can do about the way society lives today. if i go live in a shack, with no running water or electric, choose to bicycle instead of use a car, guess what? i will be unemployed. that is not surviving. so my hands are somewhat tied in that respect. i need to do, like so many other humans do to SURVIVE. im not happy about it. i wish we as a society didnt use and consume the Earth in the manner we do. but again, im one person, not much i can do about it. so i do what i can do to not disrupt nature or wildlife, in my own way. there isnt much i can do about society, so honestly, i try not to worry much about it. but i can control my own actions in the field. and thats where i place my attention.
  8. mark. what does survival have to do with the ethics of baiting wildlife in an effort to create photographs of them?

i choose to SURVIVE in this day and age with my car, and my electricity and my running water and by providing shelter to myself. but i dont look at that and say, well, these survival actions hurt wild animals, so whats the difference if i bait and harm more wildlife in efforts to get a great photo. that makes no sense. its called rationalization. and many "nature" photographers use these rationalizations so that their own consciuoses wont catch up to them. that might work for you, but it doesnt work for me.

i wish photographers would make decisions ethically, instead of making excuses to go out and make easy photographs. if a photographer wants easy photographs of wildlife, i wish they would take their a$$es to a zoo. i dont mind waiting hours or days to get that perfect photo. unfortunately, most photographers i see in the field dont. and that is sickening. we should be the voices for animals. not the ones doing them more and more harm.

  9. tough question that i dont believe there is an answer to. getting good sunrise/sunset photographs takes a lot of work and luck. even when the sky doesnt look like its going to produce good colors, it might. my experience is just get your butt out of bed and get out there. a lot of my most memorable sunrises came when i thought there wouldnt be much chance to even see a sunrise.
00GhmH-30221784.jpg.6402a8f7e429e8d67a7c3213f13add74.jpg

  10. moose are usually nowhere to be found between noon and 4pm. im sure you already know eric, but dusk and dawn are the best shots. ive only been there twice, so i dont have specific places besides cruising route 3 between pittsburg and the quebec border. someone told me errol, nh has a good moose population.
  11. im gonna be in toronto this weekend and want to shoot the skyline at

sunset. i remember hearing about some islands that i can ferry to

that have a nice vantage point of the skyline. any help on the

names of those islands? and any other suggestions would be

    appreciated. thanks......larry

  12. ive shot minolta for years. my suggestion to you would be to find a used minolta 400mm F4.5 lens. this is a fine piece of glass. it will be a little short for all kinds of bird photography, but will be fine for most wildlife situations. when working with the 600si and the 400/4.5 the autofocus will be painfully slow, as compared to using that lens with the maxxum 7, so fast moving action may be tough. i realize this lens is probably more expensive than most of others suggestions, but ive usually found that the cheap way out never satisfied me and i should have dropped the $$$ for the right lens in the first place. good luck!!! larry

  13. my initial advise to a newbie interested in landscape is to ALWAYS carry your tripod with you and learn to love the world as you wake at 3am for a landscape shoot. if you are shooting a landscape at sunset, stay until the light is gone, usually around an hour after sunset. same thing with sunrise. try to time your shoot to begin about an hour before sunrise. those are usually the times that the world has its sweetest light. in the photos you have posted, i would suggest more room on the sides of the photos from where the jetty ends, otherwise i feel the photo has a constricted feel. your horizons are level which is very important when shooting the ocean. a trick to get the lighthouse with the beacon on, is to count between flashes so you wont waste a ton of film/time. shoot as many compositions as possible. start out using rule of thirds for composition. use different apertures and even bracket from proper exposure to create different moods with color and water. relax and love what you do. good luck.

  14. just wondering if any locals can give me an update. im about to

drive 600 miles round trip for possibly 2 days time. just wondering

if we past peak in the central adirondacks. im planning on being in

and around the indian lake, tupper lake, long lake, inlet, and

raquette lake areas. thanks in advance. larry

  15. best move i ever made in photography was FINALLY moving to slide film a few years ago. the learning curve exploded for me at that point for various reasons....
  16. definitely most important is getting the camera on a tripod at sunrise/sunset. this will be especially true, if you plan on working pre-sunrise & post-sunset which imo, is the best light.
