  1. Hi Greg! Thanks for the comment. I haven't visited my site in a while so sorry for the delay! I used a 2-stop soft here but it would have been worth trying a shot as you suggested and using a GND across most of the shot to try and get some detail out of the rock on the left, especially if coupled with a less contrasty film than Velvia 50.

Wow, there is something really cool about this shot and I'm not sure what it is! I've taken shots of Eagle Falls, usually when the water is flowing much higher in the spring, but this is a fantastic image! It looks like a painting or something. I like it. Ah lawk it alawt. A solid 7/6.
  2. I had to use a 3-stop hard GND here to keep back the bright sun. Is

it still too harsh? Any suggestions appreciated. Gracias Senors and

Senoritas and also Senoras. I scanned this image in both English and

Spanish for those who are bivisual. Yes, I'm a dork.

  3. Thanks for the comments! I work part-time at REI in Roseville, CA. As for the tripod I use, I have been using a Bogen Digi-something-or-other, but I just upgraded to a Bogen/Manfrotto 3444D carbon fiber tripod which I just got a couple days ago and I haven't used it yet. I'm taking it with me to the Ansel Adams Wilderness this weekend. The wildflowers are awesome right now, yaaaaa! Happy trails!

Hi! This was a hand held shot in low light with Velvia, while zoomed

in with my 70-200mm lens while panting from hiking the switchbacks.

I was also juggling flaming swords and playing the guitar while

petting my dogs. Ha ha! Okay, that last part wasn't true, I'm sure

I had to clarify that one. I didn't use any filters or anything, we

just came across this scene while backpacking the JMT. Being

experienced in the High Sierra, this scene looked more like something

from Africa or the Andes. I'm curious about your thoughts or

    suggestions. Thank you!

  4. I appreciate the kind comments! Galen was/is my hero, combining wilderness adventure and photography like no other has, and his amazing photo from this same spot inspired me so much. I took a few pics of this same sunrise, I'll try and scan more soon. What's nice is that I live only about an hour and a half from this spot, so Lord willing I'll be able to witness many more sunrises here. I have stood here many times in the past watching these beautiful sunrises and sunsets over Emerald Bay, but rarely with a camera. Now I want to start sharing the beauty that I see. It's becoming a passion of mine as I hike, climb, and paddle. I almost overslept this sunrise, but I awoke from my sleeping bag and ran down to the waterfall as the horizon was glowing, but luckily the sun had not yet popped up over the distant mountains. As far as the Singh-Ray Galen Rowell GND's, I love them! They have transformed my photography more than anything else. I still have much to learn, and more Singh-Ray GND's to buy, but more importantly, I have so many new wild and beautiful places to explore! That's my true passion. God has done a wonderful job on this planet. How's that for a quick answer to whether I like the Galen Rowell GND's or not? :^D
  5. I'm glad these ugly bugs are actually quite small or I'd be afraid to walk out the front door! Your insect photos are truly amazing and I'd hafta give you a 7/7 for each and every one of them. This one is not "aesthetically pleasing" as far as physical beauty, but it sure is for the freak factor! Excellent job and I hope scientists are checking out your folders. And I hope they don't mess around with the DNA from this critter and let it escape outside of this species. Yowza.
