it is not a painting. it is a photographic process.
in regards to being too much work for the result, it didn't really take very much work, to be honest. and it was kind of an experiment that i'm somewhat happy with. i think it looks ok. i don't think it's amazing. i wanted to see what others thought. i'm working on a more involved one at the moment. this is kind of the beta version.
thanks for the comments.

from tech details: "Gum Print from 35mm negative, scanned and printed out on Pictorico OHP Transparency film. after printing i used conte crayon on select areas."
i know it looks like a drawing, which is one of the reasons i like it so much. especially since the area of the paper i sensitized was smaller than the image area, it looks like i wiped the paper away to reveal the image.
the highlights and shadows needed to be punched up, so i used conte crayon. it's an ok effect. i thought the image was interesting, so i scanned it. i certainly don't consider it my best.

one of my first gum bichromate, i dare say it is mixed media even.
any thoughts?

I would be very interested to see how others interperet this
photograph. possibly from a more subjective and emotive viewpoint,
rather than a technical viewpoint. of course i'm always interested in
hearing technical ideas as well, especially how i can use technique
to create more feeling.
just now i see that it may be moreeffective/affective if i were to rotate the image slightly so that
the shoulders and television were perfectly horizontal. any thoughts?

I wanted to take a picture for a particular project i'm doing about television and how people view it and how i look at it as a social phenomenon.
i wanted to create and expressive and somewhat abstract image to represent how i feel about it. the technique is simple, really. i used a holga and ilford hp5. i took a meter reading for f8, because that's the holga's only f/stop. the meter reading was something like 1/15 of a second. the holga has only one shutter speed, which is 1/100, so i knew i had to take about 4 exposures on the one frame to get an approximate exposure. so i held my hand out towards the TV, and held the camera as still as i could, and built the exposures.
it's pretty simple, and i really like the results, although i agree the absence of a wrist doesn't help. i think i may give it another try.

Insignificant? Much ugly? i'm not sure i understand why you say this.

just a note: the film is cross processed. it was for an assignment. either way, interperate it as you will, if the point is lost on you, maybe it doesn't exist.
art is so subjective.

this is probably my favorite shots from Belize, any thoughts?

please don't judge this by conventional standards.

i really really like this shot. it's very unique and very emotive.
it gives me the feeling of desperation i feel every day driving in rush hour, realizing that the rat race will never end, and that we are all stuck in this cycle of control. this man seems to have realized it, and torpor has set in.
i love it.

Hey nick, great shot. i'm really impressed with the fact that two faces can be clearly seen. i like this one and the other of the same person. one thing that bothered me was the headroom and the mic stands to the side.

I would be more impressed if it were done in the darkroom rather than the computer. i'll upload one by an artist named David Hockney. it's really amazing.

I like it, but i think if you cropped it to the top of the glass, and straightened it out a little, it would be nice. and i think the contrast is a little muddy, not crisp enough.
