    Untitled

I spent many hours working on this image. There was a lot of effort

put into balancing the the exposure, eliminating noise, and general

clean-up. I'm happy with the result.

This is a composite of four 20-second exposures. The building on the

left is the Meson Detector Building. The power poles in the center

are in the shape of the Greek letter Pi, hence their name: the Pi

poles. The small, pointy building to the right used to house the old

    15-foot Bubble Chamber.

  1. I took this image back in 1999 and scanned the negative in 2001 (not

coincidentally). I did the best I could with it back then - given the

low quality scanner used and my very novice editing skills. I've

since re-editied this shot with PS-CS4 and used a Noiseware plug-in to

minimize the scanner noise & film-grain effects. I'm pretty happy

    with the result.

This shot has a great combination of colors, composition and soft focus. It's not just another macro of a flowers innards. Well done!

    An Orchid

          5

I've been laid up at home for the past week following some medical

procedures. Sleep has been hard to come by, and while laying in a

chair and under the influence of painkillers I got an idea for a

picture. I'd just gotten the orchid and got the idea to set it in

front of my picture window at night. Last night, while free of meds,

I set the orchid in front of the window and turned off all the room

lights. The resulting light was ugly - streetlights - but it back-lit

the flowers as I'd wanted... This is more or less what I'd envisioned

that night: orchids glowing warmly from their hearts and achieved

without direct lighting. I'm sure there are better, simpler ways to

get this so any any advice would be appreciated.
