  1. Perhaps you need to select the correct color matching profile for the display, so that it matches your working color space (Adobe RGB ... whatever). But from your description I get the impression that there is little wrong with the display, but that your printer is not calibrated correctly (gamma too high, for one).

Personally, since I don't have any decent color matching profiles for my printer (Epson CP950) - due to lack of calibrating equipment & software - I don't use a color matching profile for the printer. Instead I merely adjust the printer driver settings to match the LCD image. It's not perfect, but in practice the results are acceptable.

You might be able to get a better feeling as to what your printer is doing by removing its color matching profile, and trying manual adjustments instead (printer gamma and RGB settings). Once you get this going you can turn on the complicated CM stuff in the hope to improve color accuracy. Also remember that the printer's gamut is probably (well, certainly) much smaller than the gamut of the display unit, which complicates getting a good match between the displayed image and the printed rendition.

For inspiration see Norman Koren's website, http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html . I have used his 'Digital Dog" test picture to eyeball my optimum printer driver settings (gamma and color), which cost me a certain quantity of paper and ink. Note that NK's "gamma and black level chart" is designed for a Windows PC with a display gamma of 2.2 - it does not work with the iMac.

  2. To my experience the iMac LCD display unit is well calibrated as it is; I suspect that you will not be able to improve on the profiles that Apple has already provided with the system.

With some experience you should be able to get the same or better results on your iMac as with an average video card/CRT combination on a PC. The viewing angle dependency does indeed take some getting used to...
