1.
Thanks to all of you for responding! I love photo.net's ability to share and reach out. I suppose it really doesn't have to be a fast lens for landscape; I'm looking for maximum flexibility and ability whenever I buy a lens that's why thought about fast. Fast doesn't always equate to "best" in a given situation though.
I'm thinking that the 17-40, lighter & less expensive lens, might fit the bill for me. I want to travel as light as possible.
2.
I have a Eos5DMK11 - I want to purchase a fast lens in the wide angle zoom range. I'll be shooting out West and I want to travel with a maximum of 2 lenses. I'm curious to hear recommendations both low budget and higher priced based on user experiences. Thanks so much for your thoughts.
3.
I just purchased a new computer running Vista 64 bit. Also upgraded to CS4. I will be using both the 64 and 32 bit versions of Photoshop because the Nik filters I like to use are not supported in 64 bit. My question is this, do I need to install the Camera Raw 5.3 upgrade in both versions of CS4?
Thanks.

  4. Hi Jason,

Thanks for responding. I am not a "pro" in the strictest terms, I would describe myself as an advanced amateur. I shoot anywhere from 4-12 gigs of photos in most months and use CS3 for editing and manipulating photographs. I have 3 additional 500gb external drives for storage. In a new system I want to go to a RAID system for backup. I struggle with the more technical aspects of the Digital Darkroom, simple is better for me. Also, I'm not interested in going the MAC route.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

  5. I want to speed up the process of downloading images from a memory card and subsequently opening the images. I

am using a sandisk Image Mate 8 in 1 card reader for downloading. Using ACDsee Pro to then open the Raw

images. It's taking a very long time to download and then open the image folder on my laptop. My laptop is about 3

years old, Windows XP operating system. I have an external hard drive for image storage hooked up to the laptop.

Please give me any suggestions for speeding up the process.

  6. Thank you to everyone who replied. It is wonderful to get such great feedback based on real life experiece. Charles, I have used successfully the ink-aid products on various art papers and it works very well. I've even coated pellon (better known as interfacing in the fabric store) with acrylic gel, then the ink-aid and put it through the printer. I particularly enjoy the new irridescent products.

I'm looking to standardize some of my printing practices and I'm trying to settle on a paper that will handle my fine art figure images well. I'm going to try a few of these papers and see what works best.

Thanks again for all of you who took the time to reply.

  7. Wow, I'm impressed with the quick reponses to my question. Thank you Nathan and B Christopher. I already have a flash and probably will go ahead and purchase one. I agree that the price tag is a little on the high side though. What would you suggest if I purchase "the real thing"?
  8. I'm having a recurring problem; after a period of not using the scanner, my

computer "loses" it. In the past, I've uninstalled the Twain Driver and then

reinstalled and fixed the problem. Now, this technique does not solve the

problem. I get a "failed to initialize" message. Can anyone help? This is so

annoying. The guys at Epson tell me to uninstall/reinstall. I have Windows XP

    operating system.

  9. Thank you Eric and Lex for responding. I will check out Ruijie's site. The technique I have in mind is actually freezing flowers inside a block of ice. Container-fill with water- suspend flowers upside in water until almost frozen? Haven't tried it yet, once I have, I'll post results. Thanks again for your input.
  10. Thanks everyone who responded. I frequently layer images in Photoshop. Sometimes I prefer getting away from the computer. I also enjoy the spontaneous interaction and surprise of shooting multiple exposures in the field. And... with the Pentax camera you see exactly what you are getting on the LCD. Sample image attached.
00MaJb-38547384.jpg.d766991b6893ae1d628f43b295405ea5.jpg

  11. In addition to my Canon E0S 20D and new 40D, I have an Olympus Pentax Optio

550, 5mp point & shoot, that takes multiple exposures. I love this technique

and I am hoping that Canon or some other maker will produce a digital slr.

Anyone out there who has any inside information?

    Thanks in advance.

  12. Does anyone have experience lighting smoke curling up from incense sticks using

hot lights? My plan is to put the sticks in front of a piece of black velvet

and side light the smoke. Thanks in advancy for sharing any thoughts on

    tackling this project.

  13. Thanks to Frank and Ellis for responding to my plea for help. Here's where I am - - I want to use the Polaris to trigger the strobes (wirelessly) to meter the flash. The problem I encountered was that the Polaris would not trigger the strobes from the subject's location. There is a short cable that comes with the Pocket Wizard, does that need to be inserted into the flash terminal at the top of the Pocket Wizard mounted on the camera's hot shoe? and does the other end of the cable get inserted into the camera? I've used the Pocket Wizards successfully to trigger strobes, I just want to add the third piece, the Polaris to trigger and read the flash. Thus far I've been unable to sort out which settings on the Pocket Wizard are correct, and which settings on the Polaris are correct to get everything in sync.

    Thanks for your help.

  14. I have 2 pocket wizards and one Polaris light meter. I have one pocket wizard

attached to a Photogenic strobe via the proper cable connection. I have the

second pocket wizard attached to my Canon 20D via the hot shoe. How to I set

up the pocket wizard on the camera so that I can trigger the strobe with the

Polaris light meter from the subject's location? On the Pocket Wizard there are

two choices to insert the cable, camera/flash and flash. Where does the other

end of the cable go? I assume it's the camera body? How do I set up the

Polaris. Lots of questions, so little time.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
