This is my very first "real " digital photo..shot RAW....and a crapload of futzing to figure

workflow over 2 days resulted in a gorgeous print of my pal. I think the lighting is rather

nice. 30 years of darkroom arts. My goodness....

  1. I've been thinking about that one for a few days...The photo is slightly cropped; on the right there was a dirt road that detracted from the effect....also too much foreground in original...I cropped out about 1/3 of that, and now have the effect I want. I shot this standing on an embankment, any closer and I would lose the perspective I wanted. If I was using a zoom lens I would have framed it just as you see it now. Please help me understand what "excessive cropping" means and how I might have composed this differently.

    Thank you for your comments!

  2. I've been looking at this for a couple of days trying to decide what I don't like about it. I'm an XPan shooter and tend to gravitate toward B&W panoramics.

    So, here it is:

    It's a fantastic photo. 7/7.

  3. I think I would have lightened the branches of the right tree to contrast with the sky a little more (did it work if you tried it?), but otherwise a beautiful print worthy of any wall. Congrats!

  4. Yes, the original print is very sharp and somewhat grainy, as I boosted the contrast in an originally low contrast negative. However, after printing it both ways, I liked the lithograph look of the grainier print. I think that this digital version is close to the print.

    Thank you for your comments,

This area is in southwest Nebraska ....a roadside attraction designed by some people with way too much time on their hands....

I appreciate your comments sincerely, and would especially like to understand the"1/1" rating received....constructive criticism is frequently the most helpful.

    Thanks again,

My first Web photo. Thirty years of B&W darkroom enjoyment. I scanned this print on a

mediocre flatbed scanner, adjusted contrast in Photoshop. Also my very first photoshop

manipulation. Hope to have more soon. Be easy on me guys and gals!
