Hey All - It is not very clear whether a tripod and certain types of lenses will be allowed inside the Machu Picchu area. Any thoughts or suggestions to overcome this problem will be appreciated. Any recent experiences in this regard? Thanks!

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. I'm interested in photographing the sites as well as places like Phuket, Phang Nga bay, etc. How safe is staying in Siem Reap? How do you book these hotels? Are there just some package deals available from Bangkok to visit all these places?
-
Great pictures Robert! Thanks for the information.

Hi Guys - I read a few threads on thailand and angkor wat, but need to know more
:) I haven't booked anything yet, but I am contemplating a trip to Thailand and
Angkor Wat next month. Is it possible to land in thailand and go to cambodia by
road? How about the visas? could you just get them after you land there? What
are some of the nice places one could cover in thailand in about a week? How
many days does one need to go from bangkok to angkor wat - given my time
constraints I may not be able to visit many places in cambodia. Any
information would help, as I'm just starting to read about these. In
particular, info on what and when to photograph would be helpful. Thanks in
advance!

thanks guys. the place is booked for a few months :)

Hi Guys - I'd like to visit this place sometime in the next few weeks and wanted
to get your suggestions/advice before I start my internet research. What does
it take, in terms of reservations, preparation to visit this place? What's the
best time to photograph these falls - early morning/midday/evening? Will there
be enough water around this time of the year? I don't know much yet, so any
input will help. Thanks in advance!

So I got back from an unforgettable visit to the wave in July. What's unforgettable was the hike in the heat and on the steep sandy sections with two gallons of water and two SLRs :) But, I was rewarded with good lighting in the main section. I've been wanting to go there so badly that even now I feel like I haven't been there. I couldn't spend much time around the area because the sun was getting high. How is the place in winter?

Like everything else, this whole sharpening theory seems like an ocean by itself! I will look into all your suggestions, thanks for the same. Do you guys think some other software does all these things better? I have photoshop 7 and it doesn't read RAW from Canon, so I thought DPP is a great alternative.
-
I shoot in 5D and use Canon's DPP (version 3.0.1.5) to apply white balance and
sharpening before I resize and save it as JPEG. However, the resulting JPEG
appears a lot smoother than the RAW image, if viewed on a browser or some other
application other than DPP. I searched on this topic, but couldn't find much (I
didn't spend a lot of time though). What am I missing? Also, what is the
general resolution that you guys save in, when you want to post it on the web?
DPP's help section doesn't have much info on this topic. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I guess I'll have to spend more time and look out for either the 300 or the rotation/thinktank.

I just bought this bag and am trying to fit in two slrs - a canon 5D and a EOS
ELAN 7E, attached to a 17-40L and 28-105mm lens respectively. It is pretty jam
packed inside right now. I have a 580EX to carry as well, preferably attached
to my 5D, but that may be asking for too much I think. On top of this, I need
to carry some filter holders, adapter rings and a GND filter. As I mentioned, I
have somehow managed to squeeze in everything, but they are all not in the easy
access mode. Anybody else have similar experience? do you think I should get
the slingshot 300 instead? or what other bag would work well for two slrs with
two lenses and a flash, with room for two more lenses? I am particular about
quick access, so not looking for a big backpack. Thanks.

I have a permit to go to the 'wave' in July, but considering it is the hottest
month, I have some questions:
how hard is the hike under scorching hot sun? What's the best time to
photograph the wave during the day? considering that July days are quite long,
do people typically stay till sunset (to photograph the 2nd wave)? I heard
people visit the place in the morning time and leave before noon or so, to
escape the heat. My instinct says that this will limit the photo opportunities.
In general, what's the best time of the year to visit that place (assuming of
course permits are not a problem). I looked for older threads but found only so
much information. Thanks for any inputs.

sounds good guys. I'll check out darwin's book. I am pretty sure by now that 5 days is not going to do enough justice. thanks for info about lodging too.
-
thanks for the suggestions. also, thanks for telling me about the stampeded, I might not have found anything had I looked one week later!

Hi - (In continuation of my previous thread) I've pushed the trip to July & am
planning to spend 5 full days in that area, starting from and ending at Calgary.
I'd like to get some tips on planning my itinerary (mainly booking hotels). I
know 5 days may not do enough justice, but that's all I got. Glacier NP doesn't
seem far from Banff. Some people have recommended that I visit Kananaskis
Country. Don't know how much I can realistically squeeze into this trip. Any
other tips on lodging, food will also help. thank you.

I guess I'll check out the X series filter holder. do the P series filters fit in that holder, or the filter size itself is different? Thanks for your responses, they help a lot.
-
Dan - I tend to use around f/16 or f/22 for my landscape shots to get maximum dof. that kind of conflicts with avoiding vignetting. Has anyone tried the cokin X series filter holder and the corresponding adapter for such wide angles?
-
I wanted to continue with the question that somebody had posted regarding a
similar topic. I have a 17-40L lens on a 5D so that I may get really wide angle
shots without any cropping factor. I do have a Cokin P holder with a ND grad
filter that I have used on my 28-105 lens, along with a polarizer. I've seen
some vignetting happening there itself.
I searched on this forum briefly, but couldn't find the answer to my question -
in a full frame, 17mm wide angle set up, what holder, adapter ring and square
filters would one use to avoid vignetting? Has anybody tried to just fit the
filters on top of the lenses with a rubber band? ;) It may scratch the filter I
know, but losing the edges in a wide angle shot makes the wide angle almost
useless. Thanks.

thanks guys, for all the recommendations. I'll check them out. Who knows what's there beneath the water!

Hi - I know the American southwest offers unlimited opportunities for sight
seeing and photography and have always been curious about what all could be
found in the Glen Canyon Area. I looked in this site and couldn't come up with
many links. If you don't wish to take the boat through Lake Powell, do you have
many options to just drive to some view point/hike and take some really nice
pictures? I want to get info mostly about the Glen canyon area, excluding
antelope canyon, escalante, etc. I see in the map that the "hole-in-the-rock"
road ends at a view point west of Lake Powell. Has anybody done this stretch?
I can see that it would be cool to rent a boat and go around the lake at
leisure, but if I just have a day there, how could I maximize the no. of photo
opportunities? Thanks!
-
do we take it that canon is not offering this term? I don't see it listed on their website. I'm also holding out to buy a few things ;)
-
As far as I know, the online permits are all sold out for the month of July and they won't be available for August until May. If you'd like to visit before the end of July, you might want to try your luck by physically going there and see if you win the lottery.
