I’ve installed and set up an Epson SC P800. No problem so far. Printed a couple of tests on Hahnemühle paper having to use Epson paper profiles ………… because although I download Hahnemühle paper profiles they’re not showing in the printer dialogue screen. Using Adobe Photoshop CC. (Windows PC)
Any tips on how to remedy this greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Compression, per se, derives from the background relative to the subject. Any process which reduces the net field of view has the same effect.
You can achieve the same effect by cropping as changing the focal length from the same position relative to the subject. Even the apparent DOF will change, since DOF is inversely proportional to the absolute magnification in the final format (e.g., an 8x10" print). If your subject fills the frame and you want to use a longer lens, you must move back. However if you cropped an image from the longer distance with the shorter lens, it would have the same effect.
Thanks that's helpful.

If you read the post, you'll see why the answer is basically that you can't.
This is why practice without theory is sterile
 Yes I saw your images

Okay thanks everyone.

As stated. the statement is wrong. Compression is achieved only if you move your position relative to the subject, aka change perspective. If you stand at the same position and change from a 50mm to a 200mm, there's no compression. If you move while changing the focal length (ideally keeping the subject the same size for both focal lengths), you get a compressed perspective with the longer focal length. For more details, see the post above.
Short answer: No. Long answer: since you can't change your shooting position after the fact, no.

Thanks for taking the time to answer ........... my ? was though can this be done in Photoshop.

Using say a 200mm lens causes compression in an image. Is it possible to create that effect in Photoshop cc?
Thanks.

digitaldog,
Thanks very much. I watched your presentation with interest. I'll work with the wide gamut color profile and only use sRGB in the final posting.
Thanks again.

Hi,
Am I doing this right?
Recently got am Eizo CG2420. I calibrate the screen with the built in sensor and this is labelled CAL 2. There’s also a switchable Adobe RGB mode or sRGB mode. Since I’m not printing at the moment my images are for the web so I’m doing all of my editing in SRGB mode. Is that right? Or should I edit in the Calibrated mode and then check it out in the sRGB mode?
Appreciate any advice.
Thanks.

Sorry for delay in responding, I live in European time zone. Okay thanks everyone for tips and advice. I guess I'll continue to research before I spend the money.

Calibrate satisfactorily means what?
Thanks so much everyone for taking the trouble to respond.
The Eizo cg 2420 really is at the top end of my budget and it seems to feature a built-in auto calibrator and reference system and I was hoping it would be accurate. I suppose I could get a separate calibrator and a cheaper screen but would it do the business? I can’t afford to experiment with different monitors.
Digitaldog thanks so much for the video full of tips, would this monitor qualify as a good one bearing in mind my financial restrictions?
Yes … the price of ink is obscene.

I run a Windows 10 computer.
I want to buy a printer and monitor. Currently I’m considering an Epson SureColor P800 and an Eizo ColorEdge CG2420.
When I printed previously I used a calibrated monitor but it was, for me, difficult to match what was on the monitor and what came out of the printer. Ink costing more than some champagne this was frustrating. Would the combo I mentioned above solve that problem?
I would prefer to spend less on the monitor and if possible get something a little bigger than the Eizo.
Maybe I should say too that I’m not selling prints …… I simply want to make some of my images into prints for myself.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Best wishes.

<p>Thanks Edward ........ good of you ...............that seems to work so far</p>

<p>Hi I believe that previously the crop tool automatically took on the orientation of the photographs landscape or portrait mode. Now mine always seems to select portrait mode. Is there a way around this as a default. I know I can just press the x key.<br>
Thanks </p>

<p>It is slow on my connection but so what ............. I'm sure that applies to lots of people all over the world. Maybe I should move residence so I can download adobe. As for it not being a mystery ........... I found no help on how to proceed with this subject on the web until I came here. Indeed I spoke via online "chat" to an Adobe "agent". Having spent some time checking my details and purchase info the guy shows me basically that he can't help. That's not a mystery? <br>
I'd say this about mystery ........... in my experience on Photonet, presumably set up for photographers, there are always people so willing to defend multinationals ...........</p>

Thanks to you. <br>
I had Adobe download manager in my download manager file and copied that to a flash drive and installed it on the laptop. As far as I can see I have now downloaded 9% of Photoshop so hopefully that's working and a fix.<br>
Nowhere could I find any info on this from Adobe. I guess they were happy when they sold, sorry rented me the product, and since there's no further benefit to them if I have it on another computer why bother to offer help.<br>
But you were there so enormous thanks for that.<br>
Man it is so slow to download, that's progress? <br>
Best wishes,<br>

<p>Hallo.<br>
I managed with some effort to download Photoshop CC onto my desktop. Now I want it on my laptop as well. With one license you can have it on two computers. I tried to download from it from Adobe onto the laptop but I get the following message:<br>
"Photoshop is a desktop app so you'll want to download it from your computer".<br>
If anyone knows what this means and how to implement it I would be most grateful. Yes I've looked for answers with Adobe but find no help there.<br>
(It was so easy with CS6 on a disc).<br>
Best wishes,<br>

<p>Thanks Andrew.<br>
Above I mentioned that the adobe application manager downloaded swiftly ............ I now managed to get Photoshop CC downloaded. Took two hours. Okay I was able to do other things but the amount of my time spent on just sorting this download out was around six hours. </p>

<p>Thanks everyone. <br>
For me Bob Tilden had the right answer, at least in terms of adobe application manager .......... <strong>I switched from Firefox to microsoft explorer and the download was swift and problem free</strong> .......... at least so far. I'm hoping the photoshop cc will load problem free now. <br>
<br />I checked out the web for an answer to this problem .......... zero. Spent time with an adobe "chat agent", useless. ("I know ........... we'll call them chat agents". What they mean is back ups for the robots. Towards the singularity.) <br>
And so it was photonet to the rescue. Thanks very much to all of you for taking the time and trouble. <br>
Sorry Eric ......... it had been something I'd spent many hours on and it had been a long day.<br>
I've read that adobe bridge is now a separate entity to photoshop cc. I can't say I read any mention of this when I signed up for photoshop cc. What a complete rip off. <br>
Best wishes,<br>

<p>I'm paying rent on Photoshop cc but can't download it because adobe application manager is not installing ...... any ideas how to solve this problem welcome. Or should I just cut the subscription? Spent several hours on this so far ............ never had problems with a disc version.</p>
-
<p>That's what I figured too. <br>
Another thing I'm wondering about is if you rent for a year and they then really stick the price higher and it's out of the question to renew can one still alter the the pictures I have made on CC with my Photoshop CS6 ? Usually files are not compatible backwards.<br>

<p>Mac<br>
I've put your suggestion to the people who are on the company where my site will be and they say that currently they can't do what you suggest ..........but it will be catered for on their next upgrade. <br>
So I'm simply using eMail addresses. I must leave this room.<br>
Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions<br>
I hope you all go on all right<br>

<p>Thank you for your time and trouble.<br>
Forgive me for the delay in responding. This is because I've spent many many hours setting up a "simple" email and some sort of email forwarding position. This maybe as far as I will/can go. I haven't yet connected this to my page because of this ..........<br>
Mac I'm making inquires about your suggestion on pasting the HTML to my web page support. If they reckon it will work, bearing in mind my lack of competence, I'll probably give it a go. I'll let you know further<br>
<br />Again my thanks to you all.<br>

digitaldog .............Thanks so much for taking the time and trouble. Yes I found the downloaded profiles and right clicked them to open and now they're showing up in Photoshop Print dialogue. So problem solved.
Very grateful for your help.
