  1. Hi all,

I currently scan my Velvia 24x36 transparencies with a Nikon Coolscan V which

I am reasonnably happy. Except for a few things :

    - the image is not that sharp, as transparacy cannot be 100% flat and probably

due to the optical quality of the Nikon lens.

    - there is a loss of density (especially in the hightlights)

    - Colors are not as vivid as the original and sometime not faithfull (for my

    Iceland photos for example)

I have been proposed a second hand Imacon Flextight Photo for 2500 euros

    ($3200).

    - Do you think it is worth it (I mean, is the price right for what it is ?) :

the definition of the imacon is supposed to be 3200 "real "ppi. How does that

compare with the 4000 "not so real" ppi of the Nikon ? Also Dmax is 4.2

    (Nikion) vs 4.1 (Imacon)...

    - is it a significant upgrade compared to the Nikon Coolscan V ?

    - Is there not alternative (and cheaper) options to consider if I want to

upgrade my current scanner ? Using glass mounted frame will solve the flatness

of the film but does this affect sharpness ? What about higher end Nikon

    scanners (5000 or 9000) ?

    Thanks for your answers,

  2. Hi John,

Thanks for your quick answer. Here are some answers :

--1-- I both use the 24-105 L and 100-400 L --2-- I know the IS does not work because I cannot see the image "floating" anymore in the viewfinder as I does usually.--3-- yes the combo of lenses and body already worked.--4-- I went into a shop today and my 24-105 is fine with a 30D (I can see the image floating).

  3. Hello,

I'am currently on a trip in Scotland (thus the emergency) and I noticed today

that the IS doesn't work anymore on my EOS 30 but does on another canon body.

I have tried with other batteries and clened the contacts but the issue

    remains.

Looks like the lens is not recognized by the body anymore and would not let

    the IS work.

I remember that some Sigma lenses would have there autofocus working only if

one contact was neutralized with cello tape. Could this be an answer ? Would

you have any tip to have the IS back ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Frederic

  4. Hi Christie,

My first impression is that the homepage looks professional. 1) I would have give the gallery page the same look as the others pages for more consistancy throughout the site. 2) I would put a title for "prices" (and maybe "contacts" as well) the same way you put a "Meet the artist", "Senior" 3) The link to the "Senior page seems to be broken.

    Cheers,

  5. This is an interesting discution as this is an area I am specializing in (Northern countries in general).

As far as I am concerned I have been to Norway (loved the Lofoten Islands) and Stockholm. I found Stockholm really nice and interesting to photographe. The Archipelago of Stockholm is meant to be excellent as well for those with a few more days to spend.

Have a look at my web site, it might give you some hints.

  6. Answer to J.W. Wall.

    Thanks for your constructive comment.

I will indeed put some arrows to go to "next photo" in the next version of my site in the next weeks.

There is already a "mouse over" function associated to the green and red dots which tells the country, this is strange that it does not appear with you.

  7. About the other 2 red points: this site is dedicated to the landscape photography of northern countries.

I wanted to put some other photos from others places but without giving them too much importance.

This is why NY, Mauritius, India, etc. end up in the middle of the atlantic ocean.

  9. Hi

Depends why you want ot go there.

Best weather would be in Summer

Best conditions for Aurora Borealis would be winter

Shoulder seasons are nice for landscape photography (dramatic lighting, rain and showers...)

Best time would be september : still good weather, night is long enough to increase your chances to see aurora borealis and before all road conditions allow you to go almost everywhere providing you drive a 4WD.

The center of Iceland is less crowded and has more to offer than the touristic road #1 that circle Iceland and is accessible at that time of the year.

  10. Hello everyone,

There are so many things to photograph that you may want to select a particular subject, region etc... There things to photograph for all tastes. As said earlier no need to travel far away from major towns, distances are relatively small compared to other countries (US, Australia...).

Castels : there many castles in every single "departement" (administrative division, there are 95 "departements" in France), from the middle age to the late 19th century.

Best place for castel, due to concentration and material used (white soft stone) in the Loire Valley : Chamborg, Chenonceau, Azay-le-Rideau etc...

One of my favorite, 1H driving north of Paris is the hidden castel of Pierrefond.

Monuments : Paris would concentrated most well known monument, no real need to go elsewhere.

Gastronomy : the quality and variety of food is very high througout France. Some area have there own traditional food and quite a different way of life: most known places are Alsace (far east of France) and south west (Dordogne, Perigord). You can also go to Lille (2 or 3h driving from Paris) in the far north and visit the old town.

Wine : Bordeaux area (south west), Loire Valley (center), Bourgogne (center east) and Alsace (far east)are the most famous areas. Landscape in automne is splendid.

By the sea : France sea areas are very well preserved from the building thanks to the "Conservatoire du Littoral" a public organisation that buy land to preserve them from being built. Bretany (Far west), and French Riviera (south east) are major spots very different.

Mountain : the Alpes (center east) and the Pyrenee (south west) are the highest mountains perfect for ski in the winter and hicking in summer.

I suggest you find a theme to photograph. You will still find a bit of everything to shoot in every region.
