1.
I can only talk for the G2, so I will write the advantages that had some considerable

weight in the balance between buying a G2 or a A70 or A80.

Pros:

Probably has a better CCD

4 Megapixels (A70 has 3.2 / A80 has 4)

Better optics, sharper (I assume)

Better apperture (f2 in wide, f2.8 in full zoom)

Hotshoe for external flash

Display shooting information on top of the camera

Can save pictures in RAW

Support CompactFlash Type II (not very useful anymore)

Lithium battery (not 4AA) Good battery life

Can do bracketing

Has more white balance options

Infrared Remote Control

Swiveling LCD, and Bigger LCD

1.5X larger camera body, so holds better in hand (might be a con for portability)

Metal tripod mount (not plastic)

Faster at continuous shooting (2.5 images/sec)

More on camera buttons (no need to go into the menu)

Cons:

Older Firmware

Heavier and larger

Discontinued (only available refurbished... I think)

Slower if used to Canon EOS SLR (but this is not the same kind of tool, it's a P&S)

... ?
