What I like about this photo is the soft-focus head of the girl. Her expression is compelling in a longing way, especially with the side glance. If this were mine I'd try and crop out the rest of the image, and take her down to the slope of the shoulder, not enough to see more than the straps of the suit though. I guess, you need to do something about his head/hair. Perhaps some creative Photoshoping.

Maybe you can get her to pose again in similar light, and keep her similarly soft-focused.

    grainy winter

The emptiness of this scene throws me right into silent winter nights. It's wonderful in its absence. The geometry of the traffic signs along with the parallel tire tracks, and the arc of the turn all make for a pleasing visual.

I only find that the sign on the bottom left is a bit distracting. Otherwise an enviable photo.

Thank you for including your technical details including film on this photo. Very instructive. I wish you'd always add them to your B&W photos here.

  1. Mr. Waters, this is a beautiful shot. The dark shadow that covers most of the upper half of this photo seems to be the mystery that is so far from the prayer. The shadows of this are wonderful but perhaps a little too strong up top. Faint detail would perfect this photo.

Mr. Hancock, This is a powerful proletariot image. You have a good model, a good pose, and exceptional exposure. it's too bad the amaturish frame distracts so much from the professional photographic quality.
  2. Let's face it the muse nudged your arm on purpose causing you to blur an otherwise mediocre image into an impressionistic gem. The light is dramatic in this and the colors agreesive. It's a primier painting but unfortunately most will see it as an unfortunately blurred photo. While I don't think it would have mass appeal there is something that appeals to my sensibilites.

Mr. Duke, your photos often express your eye for dramatic colors -- I look forward to seeing more from you.

This photo has a lot going for it and a lot going against it. The buildings on the left are in fine focus with good contrast and while the woman possibly deserves soft-focus you've made her an utter blur. Also the blocked up glare is too much. There also needs to be something done with the sky in the background which completely without definition. The composition of this picture is superb.

    Mr. Flanagin,

After wading through many of your photos, which have all the lighting and color sense of snap-shots I'm overly delighted to find this gem. The slightly pale yellow is pure against the green stem and slightly green background. The corp and DOF are all well done. And the flower is delicate and playful. The lighting reveals the details of these flowers well. Great shot.

I've quickly photo-shopped to suggest a crop and a little different print exposure (though without the negative I couldn't get any definition for the blocked up left side). One thing I liked in your photo is that you've captured his iris. That is certainly something you don't want to lose.

Cute kid. Good expression. But why let the whole left side block up? Also I think this photo would do well with a different cropping -- tigher on the face. Also might want higher contrast -- a little darker burn on the left side of the photo giving his expression more weight.

    Gambing. sin.

I'd feel a lot better about this photo if SOMETHING were in focus -- preferably the man's hands or the chips. I'd choose the chips as that would indicate that this is all the gambler is focused on.
  3. This lush photo needs a little more white. Her eyes should be white. The lighting could be better to give her face more definition. But her hair is wonderful and captures the light playfullyg like a flower. And some how I find her expression compellingly adorable. Her face is just too grey -- lets see those freckels!

Would be a better photo is the flame hadn't blocked up so much. You may want to heavily burn that area (say 200% or more) to get some detail out of it. The base of that candle stick has wonderful tone and is really why the photo stands out for me.

Mr. Low, this is the best of your Boxer lot. The long view of the mat is certainly better than a closeup of the boxers. I also like the dark shadow in the upper left vs. the light on the mid right walls behind. I like how the shadow on the left his consuming the light on the right juxsuposed the left boxer seeming to have the upper hand. The light above the left boxer is a bit distracting, but tollerable. Simpliy brillaint photo. Though I would like to see a higher-resolution version as the JPEG compression or scanning seems to have done this photo a disservice.
  4. Don't concern yourself with reason -- let your gut judge. I like the off centeredness. It implies that the man on the left is winning. I chess 'space' is a consideration and you're implying that with the off center shot. I also like the light on the White player's face. One thing that would have made this photo more interesting is if there were money in the fish bowl. As it stands the fishbowl is out of place and just distracts. But put a green-back or two inside and you give it meaning and place. Good photo.
  5. What amazes me about this photo is the emotion or character you've captured in these two utterly dull buildings. They seems to be having a conversation -- the left leaning into the right. And it seems as if they're as John Clark intimated in some sort of competition with each other. Wonderful photo.

And after we bury our dead we will build; we are not destroyers.

  6. This photo is just disturbing, I'm not sure why. That's in no way to say it is bad -- however, I would never want this photo hung anywhere I'd have to think about it staring at me. I like the leave close to the eye, but the one headed up the nose give a comic effect that I don't believe contributes successfully. Very claustraphobic and disturbing. I think the stare in the eyes makes me think of Laura Palmer in TwinPeaks (a corpse).

Though the shot is a little confused by certain parts of his body moving and other stable, I like that his head is perfectly still expressing the stability of the mind in this fluid situation. Also wonderful is how the opponent blends into the background.
