I should add, notwithstanding my previous comment, that I do like the overall concept of the image!

I don't typically comment on assembled images like this one, but I find the artifacts surrounding nearly every object (tree, gravestones, birds) to be extremely distracting and think they greatly detract from the overall image. I would normally assume that they're simply .jpg compression artifacts, but they're as evident on the 'larger' view as on the resized image, so I'm wondering if they're not also due to some photoshop procedures where the objects were composited with the sky.

Thanks for your suggestions and comments!
I was able to go for a walk in the brilliant sunlight following a
snowstorm in the desert. Beauty can be found anywhere!
Unmodified as usual.

If he didn't have antlers, I'd say he had too much head space. As it is, I really like the composition. The lighting is nice as well. I think (and it's hard to say from such a small photo) that there's some softness induced by perhaps both your lens and too slow of a shutter speed, but in this size it still looks good. I also like the non-distracting neutral background that gives the impression of more contrast in the buck's coat and antlers.

I was trying to capture the phenomenal detail, colors, and patterning
I saw as a towering column of smoke lifted and met the clouds.
Comments/critique welcomed.

Bulldozers will have erased this landscape in another year.
Thanks for your comments.

John, to answer your question, no, I wasn't riding when I took the picture. I was attempting to follow the rider, panning through the turn, and rotating down the straight. I (unsurprisingly) had a buffer full of OOF shots, with this little gem buried in the middle. I enjoy the latitude digital affords me to try new techniques I wouldn't have been able to justify with film.

J. Knight- what part of "As usual, this is not manipulated." was unclear?
It's a given that over-done HDR, any female nude, and anything with over 10 hours of photoshop work will guarantee high ratings on PN.
I'm partial to nothing but a crop and the standard full-image sharpening provided by my RAW converter (and whatever saturation and contrast parameters I set in-camera).
Brian.

Perhaps this picture is asking for a ratings massacre, but when I
found this lonely flower beaming at me on the fringe of the suburban
landscape one late winter afternoon, I had to post it. This picture
has Not been saturated.
