a magnificent foto! a great solution to several problems: what to with the micstand, how to include several band members in the frame, and how to make the viewer feel present at the performance. oh, and also: how to make someone want to hear their music!

wonderful textures! the slight flare/lightness at bottom left is slightly distracting. i disagree that you should burn the upper right corner: if the lower left were darker, it would bring out the roughly dark and light triangles of the land and sky respectively. excellent pic!

the viewer (moi) feels like she/he is right there! j'sais pas pourquoi, mais c'est merveilleux!
-
seems overexposed. her face, which is harsh and blown-out, clashes with the natural softness and texture of the wood. nice composition, however!
-
nice one keeping the camera still relative to the car!
-
real nice color tho

grain elevators are so cool.
-
yea, it would be much cooler if you did this in one frame, not montage.

this was a unique show, as i actually didnt use flash, due to the floodlights. i dont remember if i pushed the film. but since it was color, probably not, as it's DX-coded and i hand it to a lab and thus twice as much no control over development time. as a rule, i just go to a show, try to predict how much moving around the players are going to do. if not much, i meter while changing the ASA setting. if i can get a 15th or 30th of a second out of pushing to 800, that's pretty good. with color, i'm willing to shoot at slower shutter speeds, becuz color blurs are more interesting than grey blurs. when using flash, i shoot at ASA400 90% of the time. i dont see any point in pushing the film if youre going to use flash, it just makes it grainer and gives you a DOF that's too deep. in fact, i've gotten great results at shows with TMAX ASA100 (see my #478000). sometimes i'll want to be able to use flash and go w/out flash on the same roll, and will push to 800. for shows i mostly use a 50mm/f1.8 and a 28mm/f2. most of this pushing jazz applies to TRI-X, which you can abuse the hell out of. i dont know about other brands.

the lens flare is part and parcel of this wonderful shot, it seems to me. any cropping also seems uncalled-for. chinese temples, too, are not great places for breathing, either!

thanks much for your comments, olivier. a few clarifications, however: a)it is a pic of an empty swimming pool, not a roof. b) i guess i'd rather leave labels like "abstract" and "minimalist" to those not involved in creation. i dont think artists of any stripe have any use for such words. this is so especially when i/you think about whether i've measured up to some sort of mark. for example, have a successfully produced an "abstract" image? this just means, how good is my image compared to some "master" of abstraction. i think schools of art are just labels attached after the fact to 1 or 2 or 3 original/unique artists.
i think one of the most brilliant works of art ever--which i didnt recognize until after i'd said "this is crap" about 100 times without really studying it--is the canvas painted white. it falls into the category of "laziness" that you referred too, as i suppose the works of duchamp and the dadaists and many others could be thrown into. but the amount of effort that went into producing a work of art has no relevance to its beauty or effect or depth. i totally disagree that an artist ought to use art as a means of communicating definite ideas. this may happen, but there doesnt seem to me anything wrong with a work just making someone go "huh?".
so, about the white canvas: when you look at it, it makes you focus not on itself, but on your surroundings, or your own thoughts, the shadows from the gallery lights, whatever. this is an achievement, and has an aritistic function.
p.s. you characterized me as lazy, but how do you know how long i stood next to that pool waiting for the light to shine a certain way? you'll never know...

This was in China, as for the town...Guangzhou???

like the famous shot of Rasputin, and all other great portraits, you've somehow let the subject completely take over the foto so to speak. shallow d.o.f. contributes a lot. excellent!
-
too bad you couldn't get a little self portait in the drop...the flash could have been toned down a little, but i dont think the bkgd's distracting.
-
the meaning is for you to decide, not me. if it doesn't mean anything to you, it's meaningless. to me, it means that what is at first glance empty is as full as anything else.
-
like the other portait, this is evocative, and makes me wonder. it leaves blanks to fill in in the viewer's mind. good stuff! it would be better to me if she were sharper, but it works this way too. keep up the interesting b&w work!
