    Winter Sky

I have printed this image in a high contrast motif, and it does make the sky more profound. In the end, I decided to leave the overall gray effect because that's the look of the original scene; that leaden-gray New England sky which seems to arrive every November and depart around May.

Removing the "thing" (a bit of broken porch, IIRC) that intrudes from upper right does create a cleaner, simpler image - but I think it adds that little bit of interest that (for me, at least) makes the image.

I considered (and printed it both ways) cropping the "thing" and gray area at the bottom, and in the end decided to leave the image as-is.

  1. It depends on whether we're talking about an actual opinion - or just these limited numerical ratings.

If we're talking solely about numerical ratings, then it's impossible for me to justify my rating of "it's worth a six" in the face of the photographer asserting that "it's worth an eight." What could I use as my justification? That it feels like a "six" to me?

An opinion, on the other hand, implies the making of an argument with respect to the image; that's quite a different matter. If I offer the opinion that the image suffers because of underexposure, the photographer might respond with a counter-argument and try to convince me that the effect was a desirable feature and enhances the photo.

But how can anything intelligent be structured around "It's worth a [number]?"
