1. I did that trek last october 2005, and took my D70 and another spare batteries... no problem with electricity. I only remember two nights were we had no choice (due to failures in the system), but usually at all the lodges you will have that choice, even if you have to pay 1$ for it... do not worry, its not a big deal...In Besisahar, Ngadi, Tal, Chame, Manang... as far as I remeber no problem.

I imagine that there should be no problem at the other side of the Thorung La.. .I dont know. There was such a big snowfall when we reached Manang that we had to come back the trail... but that was very unusual by that time of the year... enjoy your trail...

  2. Another one who would rather have the "right" to decide whether to have this option activated or not; and that the photographer is the only one who can choose to have this new facility implemented for their images.

Brian, if you finally implement the "opt-out" facility, will this be applied only to the future uploads? What will happen to all the images we currently have in our portfolios?

By the way, I fully agree with Ben S comments.

  3. To me the best shot is the one where the jeep is hidden by the dust of Africa... anyway I think that the light, in most of your photos, is very harsh, and the colors are faded, sort of... I know that when you are in those places at mid-day, and probably never come back you have to do your best!... keep on shooting before going on another safari!!!

Angus, shooting photos out of the jeep... was not an option is most cases ; )

Asa, this is my gallery from Tanzania

  4. Do not miss the "Plaza Mayor" and surroundings, there are plenty of people and Christmas stands... too many people I may say... also on New Year?s Eve there is a famous and very popular shot marathon (at least here in Madrid), called "La San Silvestre". It is in the evening around 6:00 p.m. Also take a walk in the Retiro Park.

For sunrises/sunset, the best places should be near the Palacio Real and Plaza de Espaa, close by, there is an original egyptian temple (brought from Egypt some decades ago), from where to take nice photos.

  5. Next october I will be trekking around the Annapurnas with my photo

equipment. I will be up to 5.400 metres high... so any suggestions to

keep my camera "alive" in that likely, cold situation? Thanks.

  6. I was last fall in Tanzania, also camping, and regarding batteries issue, when the day was over we always asked our guide/driver to take us to the main lodge in the NP to have a few beers. We charged the batteries at the hotel reception for just 1$ while having some beers. (No one else used to do this). Just a suggestion, because at the camping sites everyone is willing to charge their batteries.
  7. Hello I am going to Belfast in 5 weeks, I would stay there just one

day, and then rent a car and drive to Co. Donegal. I would like to

take some street-pub photos in those places. Would there be any

problems taking photos of those painted walls in Belfast? Any

    interesting pubs? Thanks.

  8. Scott, I agree with the previous suggestion: on your way down to Merida you will visit some historical places in Spain rather worth seeing, such as Plasencia and its valley, Caceres (the old town is very very good) and Trujillo. But you would need at least 2 days (in just one day from Salamanca you will not have much time to take photos!).
  9. I have just uploaded a new photo and requested a critique. When I was

doing this I was quite surprised to see the possibility of asking

ONLY for critiques....lots of changes in PN, interesting...

One question Bryan... how will we manage to see those photos with no

ratings, only critiques, on the TRP?

  10. I don´t know where it will end Marc, but what´s going on at photo.net is not different from other photographic sites on the net: at the beginning people do really critique and comment, but after a few months it´s all the same: ratings, the more the better.

Some might say that by getting a lot of ratings, your photos will be viewed by more people, and then there are more chances to get a very good critique (which is quite true, I think ) There are others, only interested in ratings, probably to sleep better at night, and this is the nonsense of this site.

Anyway, although you have to dive a lot to find great photos (apart from those very good images that are also displayed on the gallery section), photo.net is still quite useful to me as a learner. On the other hand, some time ago it was really, really difficult to get one image shown there, but now it is not... so that´s not a great challenge...

  11. ... but how long will we have to wait before the administrators amend

    this "little" problem?

What I mean it is that there are lot of NON photonetters who create

an account, do not upload any photo, and all they do is to rate the

other people´s work very low, without any comment, of course!

This is what has just happened to a great photographer Carlos

Morales-Mengotti (His photos are really good), and he has decided

    to leave this site..

    How long?

  12. Another one here, with Marc...

And yes, it could be really interesting to have a POW and also an IOW (Image of the Week), I´d love to read the discussions between both forums... but if the elves want to know whether a photo is a photo or a manipulated image, on uploading photos a "must" will be to mark the "un-manipulated" box, and right now it is not... it´s up to you. Just a thought...

  13. Interesting thread, so many times discussed over here.

I am with louis here. Whenever I get a low/high rating I go to see this photographer´s skills, to get to know if his/her rating can be considered as useful.

For instance, let´s say that I post an image in BW of a composition on lines and textures. So I get a 3-4 or a 7-7, so I check his/her work. Is the portfolio full with macro insects, flash-snapshots, family picturesor the type of stuff that has nothing to do with the photo he/she rated, or in general, his/her work is less than overall???? Then, I forget about it.

Is it the photographer, as louis said, Marc G. (and so many other great photographers on this site), so his/her ratings is quite interesting to me. (even though I may not agree with)

We all know, that what matters for us (the subscribers and non-subscribers) are the comments, and that the ratings are USEFUL for the software of this site, so as it is suggested only people with at least a number of uploaded photos (don´t know how many) will be allowed to rate other people work. So everyone is happy enough: the users of the site, and the site system itself...

  14. I joined this site, like most of us, to learn from other photographer´s works and comments. So I think that the solution is quite simple: why don´t we get rid of the rating system? I rather comment a photo than giving a rating. And a easier way to navigate through the best recent shots could be using the more commented feature, or more views.

It´s easier and faster to rate a shot, but to leave a comment or a good critique you need an extra-time. So in the end, we would only comment those shots that, from our very subjective point of view, deserve it. And yes it´s true, when I comment a shot I first take a look at the photographer if he/she is an active member of this site, I´ll leave a comment but if that member´s here only asking for ratings, and hardly gives any feedback, then even though his/her work deserves it I simply look for another photographer... so probably, in the end there is a group of photographers, sort of, that are very active and that you become addicted to... just because you get some critique back.

Comments my friends, that´s what we all want...

By the way, I don´t think that banning Anna is the best solution... why don´t you ban all of us?
