Just a bit after turning onto the road to Dead Horse State Park. Right? :)

Have you considered two lighting setups that alternate (at any moment 1 is on and 1 is off) with a timer interval small enough to give the time resolution you need for the data that I am assuming that you get from these images? Other than that maybe a fill light pointing straight down will lessen the shadows without really changing the relationship to bright areas(essentially you are compressing the contrast, but the relative ratios should stay the same (I think)).

The original is brighter (not much), but it shows the noise and a few hot pixels too much. So an adjustment of levels hides most of it. Since this is a 30 second exposure at ISO400 on a Minolta D7 it is really pushing the limits of noise.
A flash would of just lit up all the fog (very dense fog) and made the shot one big blur. Plus I was too far from the trees for the on camera flash to do much anyway.
I like this crop because the trees and ground disappear (nearly) into black which I think just adds to the mystery of this shot.
Glad you guys like the shot.
