    but there are two distractions for me: 1) the focus is on his shirt collar, not his eyes, and 2) for some reason, I find the fence -- usually the kind of detail I like -- distracting, too.

    I think it's a good environmental portrait. It might have been stronger if he had been off to one side with his head still in the center of "web" rather than having his head and the apex behind it smack dab in the middle of the photo, but mostly I like it

    I rather like the tilting perspective. I wouldn't have minded a bit more detail in the cross, though, or alternatively a background sufficiently brighter to make the cross a crisper silhouette

    every photographer has his strengths and his shortcomings. One of my shortcomings has been landscape/outdoor pictures. I do a lot of hiking and always have; I love the outdoors. This is precisely the sort of picture I'd like to take and yet never seem to get quite right. I am very, very impressed and admiring.
