  1. After I called Apple, I decided to carry it to the local Apple store to see if they could do any better. After working with different combinations of their equipment and mine, I let them reformat the iPod using a Macintosh instead of the PC like I use at home. It started working with my 20D. This didn't really help since I only use Mac at work and work with images on my PC at home. I took it home and again reformatted it using my PC. This time all works fine.

I'm guessing that the original formatting from my PC had flaws. If this happens to anyone else, try reformatting with your PC first. If that does not work and you have access to a Mac or an Apple store, reformat it with the Mac and then again with the PC. I don't think fixing the problem had anything to do with formatting from a Mac, but I mention this as it was part of the process that got mine working.

Another note about using the iPod for storing photos. Many of the reviews stated how slow it was and how it ate up batteries. I think this is because most cameras have a USB 1.0 interface. The 20D has USB 2.0 and the transfer rate is much faster with low battery consumption. I have not ran any tests, but I did copy 75 raw files somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes. If anyone is curious, let me know and I'll actually time it. Would the iPod storage be adequate for a die hard pro? I have no idea. It is good for me as it is an easy way to back up files on the go or when camping. It will not display raw files, but it will store them for you. I have started shooting raw + very small jpeg. This gives me the preview on the iPod and also the raw file for processing back home.

Thanks to all for the input.

  2. I just purchased a new 30Gb iPod with the iPod Camera Connector.

According to Apple's website, this should allow me to download

pictures from my camera to my iPod for storage until I upload them to

my computer for processing. Each time I connect the iPod to the

camera, it displays 'Unsupported Device'. I just spent a half hour

on the phone with a very nice young lady from Apple who's biggest

insight for the evening was "I've had a crazy day". To her benefit,

she tried really hard. She found a document that said I needed iPod

software ver 1.1 and my new iPod and their website only offer 1.0. I

upgraded my 20D firmware from 2.0.2 to 2.0.3 and still get the same

result. Am I missing something silly here? Does anyone else have

this combo working? If not, this thing is going back.

    Many thanks in advance.

  3. I've also used it for a couple of years. From the 300D to the 20D. I use it to carry the 20D (no battery pack), 70-200, 50,wide zoom and another filter pack. It is getting full, but serves its purpose well. I use it primarily for carrying the equipment with me on the go and when hiking trails on day trips. It is with me every day and is holding up great. The waist clips were busted when I closed the door on them, but I don't think you can fault the bag for that. Besides, I do not use them. I have not tried other bags, so it is hard for me to compare. I can say I have been pleased with my bag from Canon.
  4. I live in Raleigh, NC and visit the coast often as I have family there. I use my camera backpack in much the same way I used zip locks with film. Basically, use the bag to allow the camera to warm up before exposing it to the high humidity and have had not problems with condensation. Of course with temps in the high 90's lately and heat index over 105, I have been less and less inclined to venture out. Good luck.
  5. I experimented a few months ago with a Digital Rebel and got decent results, but the exposure time was around 15-30 seconds as I recall. I have not tried it with my 20D yet, but I would expect similar results from what I have read. These cameras filter out most of the IR. There are sites out there that describe how to remove this filter so you can use the camera for astrophotography, but I was never keen about modifying my camera.
  6. Jon is correct. I had already found a local service who would try to recover data charging 'real money' as Jon puts it. But my money is important and before I went and gave it to someone else, I tried some of the simple programs that are out there. The cost to see if they worked was free and if you don't write anything else to the card you will not loose anymore (including lots of money). Just my 2 cents.
  7. I moved up from the digital rebel to the 20D today. I also added a

70-200/2.8 to the collection. My initial snapshots in the yard of

the kids were better than expected and I am looking forward to what

this combination will allow me to do. With the Rebel, I always shot

raw and converted using DPP. While researching to be sure that I

wanted to upgrade from the Rebel to the 20D, I read a couple of

articles questioning shooting in raw with the 20D. I also question

shooting 'snapshots' in raw, but I am standing strong in shooting

planned shots in raw. I guess I am curious as to what mode others

shoot in for 'snapshots', serious amateur work and pro work? I

intend to fully investigate this myself, but again, I am curious as

to what others have decided for themselves.
