  1. Hello to all, I am fortunate enough to be traveling this early summer

to the far east. Cambodia, Thailand, China, Japan. I'll be there 6

weeks or so. My question is to anyone who has traveled this area,

with large format gear, is what should I expect as far as

availability to sites, Angkor, the Great wall. Will I be harassed for

using a tripod, are these sites overrun with tourist etc. Also

related to this trip is whether or not to plunge into a set of Nikon

telephoto lenses. I will be shooting 4X5. I am covered on the wide

angle area but wonder if the longer telephoto would be worth the

weight and money for these sites. Joe

  2. Eric,

I own and use both the 155 grandagon and the schneider 210HM which I believe is the last version before the SSXL. Both of these are sharper than you'll ever need. Be aware however this sharpness and clarity for focusing come at a very huge price, financial yes but the weight is something else. When I stick the huge expensive piece of glass on the front standard I really insure that I have locked down anything that would move with this weight added to the set up. Do not underestimate what the weight of one of these lens can do to the balance of a setup. That my $.02 worth

  3. Hello to all,

After reading the last post it occured to me that most of the respondants were appoximately my age (I too and staring down the 50 year mark!) and I was wondering what the average age of large format shooter is? It occurred to me that I don't think I've seen very many young people using this format, actually I don't see too many people shooting large format at all.

  4. I've been wondering whether or not to do a workshop this summer. I thought I would post this question to the forum. What experiences both good and bad has anyone had attending these workshops and which ones would you do again. joe
  5. This is a somewhat perplexing problem. I have checked the specs for both the SA72XL and the SS80XL and they seem very similar. I currently shoot architecture with an older SA75. I also have used the SA90XL and for me doesn't have the coverage angle of the 75, obviously. I have also used the SA58XL and find it too wide, with distortion at the edges. I just got back some 4X5 trannies and some, not all, had some softness at the edges. The question is two fold. Is it the lens or could it be the film in the holder or something else which caused the softness and if I was to replace the 75 which of these would be best?
  6. I just visited the weston exhibit at the los angeles county main library. I was a visual treat to say the least. Yes the lighting is very poor but the images are fantastic. I do have a question for the forum in reguards to the image sizes that I saw. There were many prints of odd sizes, were these cropped out from larger images?, shot on different size films?, or what. joe
  7. My .02 worth, I have been shooting Kodak E100vs in 8X10 for a few

years. I also perfer this to fuji. I do a lot of architectural and

the color shifts in fuji are unacceptable. What I have found is that

the E100s is actually truer to the scene. Either way the Kodak is a

god product and we should all be happy to have a quality tranny film

available to us. Happy holidays to all. joe

  8. Q

I just wish to thank you for providing such an informative and

stimulating forum. I've been reading this for a year or so and never

miss reading every thread every day. I don't know much about

computers, hosting and the like but I do know I thoroughly enjoy this

forum. I am always searching for more information and ideas about my

choosen field and this forum provides the ideal begining for this

quest. All I can add to this is that where ever you go we will follow.

  9. I am going to South Florida (Miami) early in the new year. I have no choice but to fly. With all of the recent information I've read it doesn't seem like a good idea to take the film with me. So what I am looking for is a good reputable supplier of film (4X5,8X10 and 35mm Kodak ektachrome 100vs) and a lab who can do 4-6hr turn around time for processing. One more thing I just thought of, would it be safe to take polaroid materials, either as a carry on or checked item?
  10. I also don't particularly enjoy bidding for an item on ebay but,

having written this, I have purchased a number of items with 100%

satifaction with my purchases. I have also purchase through mpex and

they are also extremely helpfull and reputable. I would check both of

these for reasonably priced photo gear.
