    Lex-

    I appreciate your stopping by.

Yeah I was getting some pressure to do this. Some of it was not so nice and some was like "I have never done this before - show me" - which is way cool!

I have more and I will be posting more of them. This first batch are some of the shots that have gotten some natioanl exposure legs and have the contract has expired on. So I can post them.

My thought would be to increase the contrast between the car and the building as they seem to be about the same levels. The only thing that really make the car stand out is the little sliver of white that represnets the top of the car.

My other thought would have bee nto see what the shot would have looked like if shot from the right angled to the left. (therby cropping out the side street)

My personal preference is to not use a flash.

The exposure is good considering the average lighting condtions imposed on concert photographers.

In a situation like this I would have gone for just the guitarist to get a much stronger composition. The lead singer leaning in from the top is somewhat distracting and tends to cause be to first go the the Lead singer's shirt , then his head and finally to the guitartist, ( which is what I think the subject is.) asa result some of the emotion get lost in the translation.

This same shot would be stronger with less DOF.

Take a look at "Artist 3" in my concert images folder and you'll see what I am talking about.

The copyright exists on this image because years ago I posted here and most of my images were stolen. The images I am posting here have been publicy attributed to me and the copyright is required as part of my contractual obligation and requirement to my client.

I am not looking for critical comments - I dont need any and quite frankly I dont care what you think as you're not my client.

I am only posting for those people who seem to think that my opinions are meritless without a photo posted. This is also a way to refer to some technical matters that I might bring up to those people who do request critical comments from me.

So here you go I am posting shots that either ended up as CD-Covers/ Magazine covers / Promotional shots / Posters.

  1. My first thought when I seen this iamge was that it reminded me of an Escher style print. By that I mean that the background of the image apears to also be top of the image as their is no clear horizon line. The tomato and the water column give it a three dimensional aspect that complete the effect.

From a technical nature I belive that it deserves much praise and recgonition, as it is not easy to do this with such perfection.

From an artistic nature, I belive that we all have our favorite forms of shape and color that appeal to our eyes and senses. This apeals to mine , it may not appeal to yours. But that does not make it any less of an image or any less worthy of acknowledgement of what was required to create the image.

Open minds allow for more creative expressions to plant and take root thereby allowing greater expression to come out of YOU.

Is your mind open or does your mind have a pre-conceived idea about what makes a good and acceptable image?

So the picture is timeless? It smacks of C.B in all of his glory? Bah - The guy got lucky.

It is overexposed with very little defining contrast between the water and the shoreline. Other then the gal who is about to have a real bad day when she hits the water - there is no defining element about this picture that reaches out and grabs me. It evoks no emotion ( other thant reading everybody else's posts on this picture)

It is a BW shot that captures a moment in time with the help of a good motor drive. Nothing more. Since these people have been there awhile and more people will probably come, time is probably not an issue, so why couldnt the photographer spend a little more time to take contrast/exposure and filter factors into account when creating this image? He obviously has the ability to compose, however composition and the "defing moment" are just a few of the factors that make up a memorable image. This one is not.

Somebody said early on that the people look like lifeless. Its not just the people that look lifeless-> the image is lifeless.

Moderator note: I made an edit of the last line that was a nasty as well as a completely unnecessary slur toward other posters. Please keep the comments civil~!

A study in contrast. The stark relationship that exists between the girl in the blanket and her choice of a place to "live" is quite thought provoking. In a different situation she may actaully have been a former customer or employee of companies wall that she is now finding support from.

I like the picture and the message(s). The artifacts behind her head are somewhat distracting as I find myself wondering what or who they are and if they relate to the girl or to the store front.

  2. I would second the thought on choosing the portrait format for this shot.

Also asuming that this would be a portrait shot, I would like to see both ( at least the hand on the fret board) hands on the guitar and choosing a slighly different angle so we see more of the headstock of the guitar. This should change the overall relationship that exists between her head and the guitar.

I like the spot giving hi-lites to her hair, and pulling her out the background shadows.

    Aliens

Reminds me of "HG Wells War of the Worlds".

I think the grain gives it a certain "period" look and the contrast works well with the desired image portrayal.

A slight bit of croping on the image may have enhanced it a bit. But thats a subjective call.

    Great idea.

  3. Very dramatic effect. The stark white of the church provides a dramatic counterpoint to the looming mountains and shifting clouds. A very surreal effect.

As has been stated earlier, it would be interesting to see if a little more detail in the church front augments or detracts from the overall effect.

  4. What is the purpose of photography ? Why do we take pictures? The simple fact that so many of us are nit-picking this guys work proves that there is something of an intangible element that we are trying to define or barring a that, denegrade. It is so easy to take pot-shots at a newbie or someone trying out a new effect. It is so much harder to DO IT OURSELVES.

I like the photo. It speaks to me. I want to try to recreate this same effect myself. (And I ask myself how many other similar shots have I missed because I wasn't enlightned) This photo whether digitally massaged or not is still perfect, because it represents the artists interpertation.

So instead of telling the artist that he is a liar and a cheat - offer constructive advice that will make him desire to try again. So we all get to benefit from his future works.

So quit yer bellyaching about this photo and make one yourself-- and if you have enough balls to submit it we will "comment" on it too. I am sure that we will provide you with constructive critisism...
