Is B&W the solution to bad focus?

Don’t worry about “style”…yours or that of the next guy, whoever he might be… Carry on and create great images as you clearly can do. If you eventually “find a style”, good. Don’t box yourself in though. Your photography, YOUR style, YOUR images. You will find an audience that appreciate your style and even if you don’t(highly unlikely if you persevere), your memories captured. -
OK, so the old square vs rectangular image idea… I feel that a square format capture needs more deliberate composition and IF a portrait or landscape crop can be made out of it that is a total and rare happy coincidence… Your thoughts? Thanks!

👆🏻What he said👆🏻 Photography is (and SHOULD IMHO) often a very personal thing in that the image you create is what you saw and felt at the time. By all means follow some guidelines if necessary and appropriate but never force your style into someone else’s opinion. After all, the norms of today were very likely very wrong at some stage and what is THE stuff today and next week might be a total cliché next year… OK, mini-rant over😂😉 -
I SO agree with all the points you raise! I recently played briefly with one of the lower end/older EOS R bodies and to say that I am ABSOLUTELY unimpressed is probably a huge understatement. Sure, the upper end models probably have very advanced gadgetry but the look and feel is that of a kiddies party pack toy. For my needs I will stick with D-SLR indefinitely. I mean up to recently I still shot my EOS 1Ds MkII very happily and she was running on her third shutter… Let the next guy keep up with the Jones’ family🤪

😂😂😝😂 THAT is true! They actually DO look slightly better this morning…This film was washed, rinsed and pre-soaked like I have NEVER done before and chemicals all fresh… Oh well, I will try fixing a bit longer then but only after scanning as is… Cheers! Fixed it for about 5 minutes (fresh fixer) which has always been enough…oh well… Once in the past I had a dull grey film and that was also cured by fixing again…fixer was old. So we learn. -

Will do so in the morning…my local time approaching midnight. Maybe it will be better or “right” in the morning. It already looked a bit better as it started to dry… Cheers! -

Red and yellow filters vs ND Grad filter.
antonroland replied to antonroland's topic in Black & White Practice
Thanks for that! I was lucky to find a B50 / 67mm ring so I can use my Nisi filter system on all (for now😉) my lenses…fairly sure I will be able to find a B60 to 67mm ring too… The next question is whether (on b&w film of course) it is a good idea to use red/yellow screw-mount filters and grads together? One more reason to experiment a bit… -

Cheers for all of that, thanks! I’m kind-of getting the answers I was hoping NOT to get😝. My 35mm cameras are sorted with a small separate system, red and yellow. I recently got myself a 2nd MF film camera and 67mm brings everything together for my FF digital cameras and MF film camera systems…so I was hoping to escape having to buy screw-mount red and yellow… You mention different strengths of yellow…just really saw one Tiffen “yellow 2 (8)” on eBay…maybe I should put the red on hold for now and try different yellows… -

I have a Nisi 100mm system and I thought since negatives are digitised anyway I thought the grad could simply darken the sky sufficiently? Photoshop’s grad filters don’t work for me unless I am missing something? I really do not wish to build a complete set of filters for every system I shoot… -
Hello All So I am curious to hear your opinions as to whether a modern graduated filter can perform as well as a red or yellow filter with black and white film? I am surely not the only one to digitise my negatives and I like to carry as little with me as is necessary… Cheers!

Somewhere on the beachfront in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I was on an outing with a longstanding good friend and fellow photographer. Canon 5DsR with 16-35 f/4 probably on the long end. My typical post-processing is done in Photoshop using an adjustment layer or two and a bit of saturation. In this image I chose to show wave action rather than the typical milky water long exposure…
