I'm sure most of you have had the experience of processing a photo two years later much, much better than you processed it the first time. That was the case with this one.

Two years ago I processed a version of this shot that involved a 4-stop reverse GND to control the sky exposure and dodging to bring out some details in the canyon. Today's processing involved information from 2 images blended for exposure with lots of color/luminosity masking to bring out details. The result is more vibrant and alive. The previous version was very dark and much flatter.

I had to redo this one for solo project I'm doing with a large format calendar company in Europe, so I figured I'd share it with you to. Going back over my results from years ago, it makes me wonder what I'd be able to do if I just had the time to reprocess more often. I'm sure a lot of you feel the same :-)

This is sunset over Toroweep Canyon, Arizona.

Exposures: 2 seconds, 20 seconds. Canon 5D, 16mm.

"How you can tolerate the forum "help" your photos often get from lesser talented photographers"

Its not THAT big of a deal. Photograpghy is one of those fields where someone can make a valid criticism even if they don't produce results as good. Anyone recieving such critiques can merely take them under advisement and evaluate, for themselves, if its useful. If someone is so senitive that that it is difficult to "tolerate" critical comments, they should not post images for comment.

In my case, I don't have any criticisms.

Marc. The background adds to my appreciation of this beautiful piece. Great shot and masterfully processed. Regads. Jim.

As always a great image. The light you have obteined on the rocks is superb. I agree, the experience in post production is better after two years, but your images were great two years ago too. Obviously my rate is 7/7. Composition, light, colours, location, glow-process are cool... I'd like to know wath you think about my works, if you want.

Best regards.

Simply the most beautiful image I have seen of a canyon for a long long time. Incredible exposure and details and of the rocks and sky at the same time. Could you explain for us beginners exactly how you did it?

Thanks

Brian
