Lamps in India

Before the advent of electric bulbs, fluorescent tubes and CFL lights,

houses in India, had earthen lamps with oil & wicks to dispel darkness.

But this practice of lightings lamps has changed. Except traditional

homes and temples in India, earthen lamps are not being used.

Perhaps in few other countries could there be such a wealth of imagery

and symbolism built around the lamp. With the passing of time, earthen

lamps have been replaced by fancy metal lamps of various designs.

Light symbolizes Knowledge and Darkness symbolizes Ignorance.

Symbolically lamps dispel darkness and thus ignorance. The oil

denotes desires and the wick Ego. With the burning of oil and wick, our

desires and ego are exhausted. Our aspirations should lead us towards

higher ideals, like the flame of a lamp which burns upwards.

Interesting imagery in your preamble. With a stack of lamps like this one you could probably heat your home as well as illuminate it. :-) The lack of ambient light, however, has left the tier of lamps floating on a void of blackness, like a galaxy in outer space. That's OK if it was your intention or if you had no other choice. I wonder how this would appear if the surrounding blackness were able to give up some of it's concealed elements. Interest is added with your explanation though. Thanks for broadening my horizons. Best, LM.

Len, thank you very much for your feedback. You are right. I had no other alternative, because there were too many distractions.
