pnital 36 Posted October 12, 2009 Thanks for viewing. Was photographed in London, but as Motherhood 1 was photographed in Jerusalem and they are related by subject it takes place here. Link to comment
davidorea 1 Posted October 12, 2009 Beautiful capture, Pnina. I like the scene, details, colors and DOF. Good shot! Warm regards Link to comment
adan1 0 Posted October 13, 2009 Your Jerusalem pictures are some of the most fascinating ones to me revealing not only the place but also giving us glimpses of the people that inhabit this sacred city. These are not mere snapshots but visual essays. This is a dynamic composition with the three characters in a triangular formation. . The little boy's excitement is evident without even looking at his face with the mother's hand in front of him suggesting restraint. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted October 13, 2009 David, and Alec, for your nice comments. Adan, thanks for your wide evaluation on both, as they are "talking" of the same subject. in the details I wrote that this one was taken in London, which I have visited recently. It was my fault not mention it in my preface. I have corrected it now. In both cases I wanted to show the strong difference of women's way of life and customs on one hand, and the motherhood on the other. Both are women of our modern times.... (this one is a reloaded photo). I hope this one and the previous one will be a thought provoking duo. Link to comment
amalsircar 2 Posted October 13, 2009 Pnina, no,doubt about what you write. Your images make me ponder and admire the thought behind capturing an image. Link to comment

pnital 36 Posted October 14, 2009 Amal, Elsi, Tolo and Margaret. Thanks all of you, very much appreciated Margaret, you are right that motherhood is universal, BUT not the status of women. I belong to a world wide women Org. BTW founded in Oakland USA, in 1921 to develop the status of working women , and it is a long time that one of this organization important aims is to work for better the status of women in many places of the world. Women are still in difficult situations, under represented, and under privileged all around the globe, NOT connected to motherhood.... I'm against ANY kind of discrimination! religious racism , or any other form of it, and I'm pro women liberation. This photo was deleted sometime ago as the discussion was not taking the right turn, so it is uploaded again, but my message then and now ,(Motherhood N 1 as well) did not change. Link to comment
jeffl7 0 Posted October 14, 2009 I'm still drawn to her eyes, watchful. I wonder what choices her children will make. Or will have. Link to comment
myattphotoandfotoart39 1 Posted October 15, 2009 ah yes.. one of my favorites...I will abstain from further comment this time around albeit I am tempted :-) Link to comment
gordonjb 10,860 Posted October 15, 2009 The triangle theme that is set in motion on the larger scale by the women and two children, following through in descending order to the shawl ,the extended elbow and finally the burka over her face, pulls me into the scene and bring me to the central point of the image... her eye. With a single eye being the only bit of facial expression visible amongst all three of them , that eye has to speak for everyone and it does have a lot to say. I like the narrow dof and the sharpness of the focus on the women. The woman's hand and the outstretching hand of the child seem to locked together in a familiar gesture that the boy can comprehend from the simple wave of a hand. The woman's posture and her gaze are protective as if she is scouting the road ahead before preceding. Link to comment

LindaM 2 Posted October 16, 2009 like the previous photo, this is both familiar and foreign. i find it interesting that while the mother is totally covered, her daughter is wearing contemporary clothing. i wonder, is there a certain age when the veil is imposed? Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted October 16, 2009 Jeff, in both scene of motherhood ,the children ( girls for sure) , most of them ,has a path that is dictated by religious rigid rules and customs ,as well as education, and imposed by men of the religious hegemony. Women mostly does not has a say, a will of their own. Thank you Meir, I have uploaded it again as I myself as a woman has a lot to say in this subject. Thanks Alberto for your comment. Bob, yes, motherhood is motherhood, but behind the mother there is a woman which in many places in the word has not an equal value as the men has....Discriminated, under privileged, illiterated because they are denyed learning to write and read...... and has a very law status.! Gord "Her eye. With a single eye being the only bit of facial expression visible amongst all three of them , that eye has to speak for everyone and it does have a lot to say." Yes, her eye is telling a lot. I think you have understood the wider context of the two photos. Living in the Middle East , as well as being a part of a women Org. (Which I wrote about in the upper part) I wanted to upload the duo photos to be thought provoking subjects. Behind being a mother there is a woman/human being. As I wrote before there is a lot to do to better the status of women in many parts of the world, and their fight for being liberated from the religious tyranny and discrimination. Linda, it start relatively early. It is familiar and also very different to you, as it is also in the news ( like in France the government does not want the girls coming to school with a burka, also here, girls from an early age in the very religious parts of the country are covered with long clothes( not face though) Women that fight to rebel the situation, are many times endangered and outcasted from their family and community. Landrum Kelly 64 Posted October 16, 2009 Pnina, in some ways I like this one even better, at least where the overall composition with the kids is concerned. These are very special shots on a theme that means so much to all of us. --Lannie Link to comment
margaret1 0 Posted October 17, 2009 The most wonderful thing about this site is what I learn, and it is not all photography. Thank you Pnina. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted October 17, 2009 Thanks Drago Lannie, "These are very special shots on a theme that means so much to all of us. " I appreciate your taking the time ;-)) you have well "framed" the subject in one sentence. Margaret, thanks for your follow up, yes, we learn of human life through photography here, but for sure not only photography.. Link to comment
tibig 0 Posted October 17, 2009 Lovely series, Pnina. I really like your warm approach and sensitive capture of the atmosphere. So much more comforting than what you usually get in the news... A fascinating city where time has a very different flow than in any other place: it seems to accumulate so that the past is a misnomer there as it all stays with the present. Best Regards, Tibi Link to comment
jim kerr 0 Posted October 18, 2009 Hi Pnina, I sure would think this young mother gets very hot on summer days.;......Jim Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted October 18, 2009 Tibi, thanks for commenting in general on this series.. You are right that Jerusalem with its past history. lives in the very present..... ( btw, I don't know if you have remarked it , but Motherhood 2 was photographed in London lately, not in Jerusalem, but the connection is there....;-)) Jim, glad to see you here. Let me tell you that feeling hot is only one parameter.... I hope you are feeling better.I wish you to. Link to comment
