This piece is quite intriguing and in many ways very unique. As a viewer, the first thing I immediately notice is just the massiveness of this tree, which I think is really the focus of the piece. Many aspects of this photo support this theme of size. For example, the tree standing to its left gives viewers an idea of just how large this tree is by comparison. Also, the shaded area around the tree displays the immense protection from the sun provided by the thick branches. Finally, the fact that many of the branches are actually leaving the frame of the picture shows that a good distance away from the subject is needed to even capture the entire "structure". All of these things help establish the idea of a giant tree. Overall, a nice composition, good use of color, and as a result, strong contrasts.
