Upland Gear

Matt Laur

D300 at ISO 200 (-0.3EV), 1/125. Nikon 50/1.8 at f/13. Shooting under a diffused Zeus ringlight on a camera-left stand pointing down at about 45 degrees, with some backlight and fill from two AB-800's with 20-degree honeycombs. A 40-inch reflector, opposite of the ringlight, is used to soften things a bit more. Behind and under the subject is Thunder Gray seamless paper from Savage. The puppy is 7 weeks old, and that's a 12-gauge shotgun. Boots by Danner.

An experiment in lower-key light - something I'm finding to be a solid

challenge, with a moving subject. Thanks for visiting, and any thoughts

on the approach.

This little guy is learning all about what's important in a bird dog's life, although he may be planning to sample a bit of shoe leather!

I don't feel qualified to critique the lighting, having done virtually no studio work myself - but I do know I love the shot, especially how the brown tones of the gear compliment the pup's colors, (and of course there's the subject matter!).

Best, David

Terrific. Beautifuly crafted lighting and great placement of items. The little dog is the icing on the cake.

Really cool. I've never seen anything like it before...original idea? You may have found a photographic niche: hunting dog portraits. Probably nothing new, I'm just uninformed, but nice work either way.

Low key light and a young dog in the same photo- You have my respect. Nice light and a wondefull photo where you have put still life and 'life' together.

Nice to read your tech details too.

Thank you, everybody. It's gratifying to find that this image is working out. My next project will involve the same technique, but on a location set. A lot more variables to wrestle with, there. Thanks once again for the warm comments.

Having now done photo shoots with horses and dogs, I am simply awed. The technical perfection, particularly in the flash tour de force, is impressive enough...but the dog! If I may borrow your hat, I will doff it in your honor.

Incredible light and details drew me in right away. I love the dog as part of the composition, and I just can't help but wonder how many shots you took. This one goes in my favorites so I can continue to study your expertise, Matt.

Great overall tonality balance.

I'm curious about the shotgun shells?

They seem a tad OOF? That doesn't seem possible

as the gun stock appears to be in focus.

My only minor critisism is only personal taste;

I'd prefer to see the shadows lightened a bit under the case flap,

the boot and under the rim of the hat.

I love the expression of the dog, he totally makes the composition. We all have seen the normal compositions with a gun, dead bird, and so on, but in this picture it almost looks like the dog says "all this stuff is mine!". It's nice that the dog sits here in almost a human way "Keeping an eye on all the equipment".
